SCATTERED KK HOSPITALS CAUSE HARDSHIP

PKR: Scattered KK hospitals cause hardship

Kota Kinabalu April 30, 2012: Poor planning and lack of foresight on the part of the Health Ministry has inevitably caused great inconvenience, confusion and hardship to the masses in terms of providing services.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) KK Division Chief, Christina Liew, said this is an undesirable outcome of having three hospitals scattered within the State Capital without taking the people's interests into consideration in the first place. These are Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) 1, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) 2 and Sabah Women & Children's Hospital, Likas.

QE HOSPITAL TO OPEN NEXT MONTH

QE Hospital to open next month after refurbishment

image KOTA KINBALU July 30, 2011: The Queen Elizabeth II Hospital (QEHII) will be fully operational next month, a step towards normalising health services in the state.

Renovations to the hospital took less than eight months and were completed on July 27.

Sabah Health Department director Dr Mohd Yusof Ismail said the state Health Department should be able to provide better services to the public once the hospital re-opens.

He said the renovations to 12 operation theatres have been completed.

Among the work carried out were the construction of a five-storey car park, elevators, refurbishment of the Accident and Emergency Department, and deve-lopment of the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Centre.

imageThe QEHII building was bought over from the Sabah Medical Centre last year by the Federal Government to overcome congestion after the 12-storey tower block at the premises was declared unsafe.

Dr Yusof said work to replace the tower block was progressing as scheduled and is expected to be ready next year.

BUYING OF SMC WAS USELESS, SAYS UPKO

Buying of SMC was useless, says Upko

April 02, 2011Kota Kinabalu: United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Organisation (Upko) on Friday wants the Health Ministry to seriously look into the health needs in Sabah which it described as pathetic.

Its Vice President, Senator Datuk Maijol Mahap said the conditions at the QEH I is chaotic while the wards were simply "overloaded" with patients.

"The ward is cramped and very often the patients were asked to return to their district hospital soon after being operated and not recovered from the surgery," he said.

To make matters worse, he said the district hospital is unable to provide proper treatment to the patients due to lack of expertise, equipment and facility.

Because of that, he said the condition of the patients continues to worsen.

When this happen, he said the district hospital simply send them back again to the QEH.

Inevitably, he said the situation is compromising the patients' safety and health.

Another problem he said is logistic when sending patients from QEHI to QEHII.

Maijol claimed that when patients from QEHI are transferred to QEHII, it takes about two hours to accomplish because they have to arrange the ambulance which is limited as well as to arrange for accompanying doctors and nurses.

"What will happen to the life of the patient in case of emergency and urgent surgery?" he asked.

The government he said bought the Sabah Medical Centre (SMC) and renamed it as QEHII but that the equipment such as CT scan and MRI there could not be used because it was damaged.

However, he said the equipment could not be repaired because the government has no funds to repair it.

"But how could the government have no money when they had the funds to purchase the SMC at a cost of hundreds of million of ringgit?" he queried.

With regard to the delay in the construction of the new QEH building, Maijol said it is a farce.

The Health Minister he said gave the contractor until May to complete the given task.

However, he said the project should have been completed in time.

"Any delay in its completion will have a very far reaching implication including loss of lives," he said.

But construction at the new building is not the only reason that Upko is very concerned with, he said.

He said the Operating Theatre building next to the old ward that has been completed some time ago, still could not be used due to lack of surgery equipment.

"But I don't understand the logic. Why is it that they have the money to build it but no funds to purchase the equipment?" he asked.

He claimed that there have been cases in the past where patients died while waiting to be operated on.

Such is an extremely sad situation of the medical services in Sabah, he said Maijol said the district hospitals also lack in many things.

Citing a personal experience, he saw a young mother who has just given birth in Kota Marudu hospital lying on the floor with the new born baby.

"When I asked the doctor, he said there just aren't enough hospital bed for the patients," he said.

Given the scenario, he said it is unbelievable that the situation in Sabah is just worse as in undeveloped nations where health services and infrastructure is concerned.

To this, he asked what the Health Ministry and Health Department is doing to improve health services in the State.

At the moment the Ministry and Department's health development programmes for Sabah remain very unclear and confusing.

"I hope they will do something because the people of Sabah also want good health.

"We also want the medical facilities and services in Sabah to be on par with those in the peninsula," he said.

He said that they should also consider building more hospitals in Sabah.

This is because the number of poor people or hardcore poor in Sabah numbered more than those in West Malaysia, he said.

"Yet the number of hospitals there by comparison is far more than what we have in Sabah," he said.

Meanwhile, in the long term, he proposed the government should also seriously consider acquiring the army office and quarters next to QEHI.

HOSPITAL QUEEN ELIZABETH II SIAP SEBELUM APRIL - LIOW

Hospital Queen Elizabeth II Siap Sebelum April Ini - Liow

"IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT THEIR WAKIL RAKYAT AND THE LAND OFFICERS CONCERNED ARE NOT AWARE THAT THERE ARE LOCAL VILLAGERS IN THE LAND APPLIED FOR BY THE COMPANIES.”

It has become abundantly clear that there is something very wrong with the State's land management and approval process.

Local villagers who have settled on land for two generations suddenly discover that their land has been approved to a private sector.

"It is impossible that their wakil rakyat and the land officers concerned are not aware that there are local villagers in the land applied for by the companies. This opens up the question of abuse of power, corruption and dereliction of duty by Government officials and their elected representatives,"

The imminent hike in electricity tariff and sugar prices would add to the hardship suffered by ordinary people.

The issues leading to a crisis of confidence include the illegal immigrant problems, electricity and water supply, poverty, empty promises, poor health service and many more.

MASALAH HOSPITAL RANAU PERLU DITANGANI SEGERA, KATA EWON

KERAJAAN BELI SABAH MEDICAL CENTRE

NOTHING ESCAPES US NETIZENS

CERITALAH

By KARIM RASLAN

In more mature markets, the newspapers are the forum for debate and analysis, while the Internet is the news hub, churning out updates.

However, as a citizen and a reader, I expect the news media to give choices (the pros and cons) so that I can make up my own mind.

The Internet is democracy gone wild. It is unregulated and can, in certain instances, verge on the wholly insane.

However, the “Wild Wild West” of news and views where fiction becomes fact and mere speculation the touchstone for the truth is strengthened by the continued government influence on the mainstream media.

Now, with technology’s extraordinary advances, we can immediately counter-check what we read in the newspapers through our own WAP-enabled and/or Internet-ready hand-held devices.

It is estimated that the Internet penetration of Malaysian 18-21-year-olds is in the region of 70%-80%. This means that the vast majority of new and soon-to-be voters are highly familiar with alternatives to newspapers and TV.

Indeed, it’s arguable that for this sought-after section of the voting public, the alternative media may well have become the “mainstream”.

Indeed the growing fluency of Malaysians in various languages – most of us are bilingual if not tri- or quadri-lingual – means that what someone says in one language will be read across the nation within nanoseconds.

In short, there are no “racial and linguistic silos” left and Malaysian leaders have to come to terms with the increasing openness of the media landscape, especially if they wish to win middle-of-the-road, middle-class Malaysians or all races, most of whom feel uncomfortable with language that is disrespectful to one community or another.

Finally, ladies and gentlemen, you may sit in your palaces and official residences but rest assured we’re watching and judging your every moves on our computer screens, our iPhones, our Nokias and Blackberries.

" NOW UP TO THE MINISTRY TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION " QEH SAGA

image

Kota Kinabalu: The proposed plan for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) to take over Sabah Medical Centre (SMC) "within six months" to resolve the beds shortage includes the provision of 300 beds, 29 ICU beds, two Cardiac Operating Theatres, two Cardiac Laboratories, five operating theatres and all the relevant facilities.

At the same time, QEH is allowed to carry out its expansion according to the Ministry of Health's (MOH) requirements. However, there is no mention of when the duration of the six months was to end or how much the planned takeover would cost. Except that the price to be offered by SMC "would definitely be low, compared with the cost of past hospitals built by the Government."

A SMC spokesman who declined to be identified confirmed in a statement that negotiations had been going on between the Ministry and SMC and that it is .

The spokesman said that based on the plan, within two years SMC would be handing over to the MOH the following:

A tertiary care hospital equipped with 450 beds; 43 ICU beds; 12 operating theatres; two Cardiac Laboratories; a complete range of specialist departments and all the required hospital back-up facilities, besides a fully-equipped Heart Centre and more than 500 parking spaces.

"This would essentially provide once and for all, the people of Sabah, a one-stop full facilities hospital that would save them the trouble, money and time of having to seek treatment outside Sabah. Based on our knowledge and experience, this could be the most efficient option for MOH to obtain an additional 300 beds within six months and 450 beds in 24 months.

"If the said proposed plan is implemented, it would completely address the ongoing crisis in QEH within six months. This includes solving the shortage of 265 inpatient beds in QEH," he elaborated in a statement.

QEH ISSUE …

Call for multi-pronged approach

Kota Kinabalu: The Visitors Board of Queen Elizabeth Hospital said a multi-pronged approach is needed to resolve the QEH issue.

Its Chairman, Chu Kong Ming, said the (proposed procurement of) the Sabah Medical Centre (SMC), Wisma Khidmat, (construction of QEH) Twin Towers, new heart centre and Kinarut Hospital plan should be handled simultaneously rather than one at a time.

"The approach not only resolves the impression of neglect and indecisiveness of the Federal leaders, it also augurs well with the Government's intention to revive the economy by developing infrastructure assets for long-term benefit to the State and country, as a whole,".

'Better option overlooked'

Kota Kinabalu: The best and quickest solution in overcoming the current shortage of hospital beds while at the same time save several hundred million ringgit of tax payers' money in the current downturn will be to convert Hospital Mesra in Bukit Padang, Luyang, into a general hospital.

"It would also be very straightforward to find a replacement for these mental patients," he told Daily Express. "Besides, the Government will also have site set amidst greenery that aids in recuperation and whatever that's needed could be added on because there is ample land for expansion there.

"With its highly-trained and skilled medical personnel, state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, modern facilities, accreditation based on international healthcare standards, competitive cost of treatment and excellent hospitality, Malaysia is a preferred destination for people seeking treatment for various ailments,"  said Malaysian trade commissioner in the United Arab Emirates Noraslan Hadi Abdul Kadir ahead of the show.

There are over 140 hospitals and 5,000 primary healthcare facilities in the public sector while the private sector accounts for more than 230 private hospitals and about 4,000 medical and dental clinics.

“WE HAVE TO SEND THEM OUTSIDE OF SABAH”

pic_isa KOTA KINABALU: Queen Elizabeth Hospital is referring patients who are suffering from diseases that require urgent treatment such as cancer to medical facilities outside the State.

“However, there are some patients who refused to go out of the State for treatment,” said Sabah Health Director, Dr Marzukhi Md Isa.

“As far as we are concerned, if they need to get attention as soon as possible, we have to send them outside of Sabah,”.

“We don’t have enough space,”.

“Eventhough we are not having problems in that sense, we expect more problems later on,”.

Dr Marzukhi also commented on the recent proposal by the Health Ministry to take over the vacant Wisma Khidmat building (adjacent to Wisma Muis) to replace the QEH tower block which has been declared unsafe.

When asked if the building was suitable, he replied: “That one I am not sure.”

Nevertheless he is asking the people of Sabah to be patient and promised that at their level, they want to get the best for the people.

“That is my promise,” he said.
