Hamza denies Philippine media allegations on police brutality

PETALING JAYA (March 11): Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib has firmly denied all allegations of police brutality against women, children and civilians during the Op Daulat mopping-up operations.

Speaking at a live telecast press conference, Hamza vehemently denied the allegations, saying that the innocents were not harmed even though they were found to be in the well-established “red zone” which has been cordoned off by the security forces.

KOTA KINABALU, 25 Sept — Pembantu Menteri Pembangunan Sumber dan Kemajuan Teknologi Maklumat Negeri Datuk Jainab Ahmad mencadangkan agar Kementerian Penerangan Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan (KPKK) mengekalkan bangunan Radio Sabah (RTM) yang lama sebagai bangunan bersejarah.

Ketika membuat gesaan itu, beliau berkata bangunan Radio Sabah merupakan mercu tanda negeri Sabah sebagai radio pertama yang beroperasi pada tahun 1952 dengan memperkenalkan pelbagai rancangan radio yang lebih tersusun dan secara tidak rasmi perkhidmatan ini dikenali sebagai Radio Sabah.

Menurutnya, sudah menjadi trend sejak akhir-akhir ini di mana berita yang dikeluarkan tidak tepat dari segi fakta.

“Jadi saya berharap kalau ada fakta tidak betul kita perbetulkan dan polis akan terus memberi kerjasama,” katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Facebook and Twitter have hobbled Lynas Corp’s RM2.5 billion plan to fire up the world’s biggest rare earth refinery in Malaysia, the Australian miner’s chief executive Nicholas Curtis told Bloomberg, warning Putrajaya foreign businesses were rethinking plans to plant their money here.

In an interview published today, Curtis told the business wire that he had underestimated the power of Facebook and Twitter to rally opposition to the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) here, which has been slapped with further conditions, delaying its operational start-up and which cause it to lose up to A$10 million (RM32 million) a month.

“I’d have dealt with the emerging community debate by the social media a little bit more intensely, a little bit earlier,” Curtis(picture) told Bloomberg, in hindsight.

“We probably didn’t recognise the power of the social media to create an issue.”

This new method has also helped to further bridge the gap between the people, especially the younger generation, and their political leaders.

M’sians don’t read papers because of bad reporting

Malaysia's poor education system and lazy reporting have led many to stop reading newspapers altogether.

KUALA LUMPUR Jan 12, 2012: Local reporters have no idea of journalism and this has caused many Malaysians to avoid reading newspapers altogether.

A university don says this has led many reporters to be little more than transcribers.

Though restrictive media controls and political ownership of news outlets were at fault, Notthingham University professor Zaharom Nain (picture left) said that many reporters in the country were just lazy.

“Our writers or our reporters are unable to evalutate or analyse (in their news pieces). Yes, they have controls and editors who listen to owners, but a large part of it is due to plain laziness. They are unable to do more than just transcribe the thoughts of others.”
