WHY 'KIRAM' IS DREAMING

Why 'Sultan' is dreaming

Kota Kinabalu 27/03/2013: Sabah was free from any claim when it achieved independence through the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, according to former State Archives Director, Datuk Datu Tigabelas Datu Zainal Abidin.

He said independence was achieved through five charters which made Sabah free from any claim either from the Sultan of Sulu, Sultan of Brunei or the British which once called North Borneo their own, i.e. British North Borneo.

He said this during his talk titled "Sulu's Claim on Sabah: True Facts" in conjunction with the Ops Daulat Security Briefing organised by the Information Department at Wisma Dang Bandang, Tuesday.

  • The first charter, he said, was when the Sultan of Brunei made an agreement with Alfred Dent and Baron de Overbeck on Dec. 29, 1877 followed by
  • the second charter when Sultan of Sulu made an agreement with Alfred Dent and Baron de Overbeck on Jan. 22, 1878.
  • "The third charter was when the British gave the North Borneo Chartered Company the power to administer Sabah on Nov 1, 1881, followed by
  • the fourth charter on July 9, 1963, when we signed an agreement to join with Sarawak, Singapore and the Malay Federation to be free from colonisation.
  • "The fifth charter is when the United Nations announced that the majority of Sabah and Sarawak wanted to be part of the Federation of Malaysia," he said.

PEKADIN MAHU BUKU TEKS SEJARAH MALAYSIA DIKAJI SEMULA UNTUK PERINCI SEJARAH SABAH, SARAWAK SUSULAN KES LAHAD DATU

Pekadin mahu buku teks sejarah dikaji semula susulan kes Lahad Datu

SULU CLAIM – A SAD, TRAGIC LIE

Sulu claim – A sad, tragic lie

Raymond Tombung

Sabah became the vision of the last gold coin that could win back the possibility of rising again, getting back the worth of a name: the venerable House of Kiram.

23/03/2013: The Sabah claim will continue to be raised by the Phlippines and Sulu as it is powerful and emotive international issue which many leaders from Manila will find convenient to bleed for political mileage. And the many “sultans” in Sulu will continue to cast their hungry eyes at Sabah, considered to be “the last gold coin” and aspire, albeit hopelessly, to try and achieve the impossible.

But Malaysians, especially Sabahans, should be able to give a cogent argument on the issue of this claim and in favour of Sabah.

“WE HAVE TO RESPECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE OF SABAH.”

Sabah claim: History on Malaysia’s side

A scholar gives three reasons why the Sulu Sultanate cannot assert sovereignty over the state.

KUALA LUMPUR 22/03/2013:  A scholar has urged Putrajaya to reject any call for a negotiation on the Sulu claim over Sabah, saying the issue was settled decades ago.

“Neither the Sulu Sultanate nor the Filipino government has a claim over the North Borneo state,” said DS Ranjit Singh, an expert on Southeast Asian political history who is now a visiting professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia.

“The moment we negotiate with them, we compromise our sovereignty,”

‘GUERILLA TACTICS USED BY SULU TERRORISTS INEFFECTIVE’

‘Guerilla tactics used by Sulu terrorists ineffective’

LAHAD DATU 20/03/2013: Although experienced in guerrilla warfare in southern Philippines since 1899, the guerrilla tactics used by Sulu terrorists have failed to breach the country’s defence.

Instead, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) which used guerrilla tactics defending the country against the communist threat between 1984 and 1989 succeeded in crippling the terrorists.

“The guerrilla tactics used by terrorists currently holding out in Tanjung Batu can’t match the tactics of our security forces. This is proven by the 62 terrorists shot dead,”

WE MUST LEARN FROM THE LESSONS OF LAHAD DATU

We must learn from the lessons of Lahad Datu

Melia Dangin

12/03/2013: In the early 1990s, a small group of Filipino men heavily armed with M16s guns and grenade launchers appeared suddenly in Semporna town.

Their target? None other than the small Semporna police station, the nearby equally small marine base and the police barracks.

These marauders operated with military precision. How else do you explain their capability in trapping our security personnel in their own base?

They had positioned themselves strategically and rendered our men immobile.

They took control of Semporna for about 20 minutes from the time they cornered the police and moved to the town centre less than 800 metres away firing randomly into the air.

OSU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF, SAYS ARIAH

Osu should be ashamed of himself, says Ariah

Kota Kinabalu 21/01/2013: Former PBS Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Ariah Tengku Ahmad, 75, is glad that the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah has at least provided the platform for truth to prevail.

She said if not for the inquiry's testimonies, the reality surrounding the controversial electoral results of the Kawang Constituency in the 1994 State Election was now made known to the world.

She praised the Najib administration for heeding the wishes of Sabahans for the inquiry and said it would help regain the trust of the people. Ariah, who was Kawang Assemblywoman from 1985 to March 1994, lost to then BN-Umno candidate, Datuk Osu Sukam, by a mere 64 votes.

"Winning an election through sheer deceit is no victory but a most dishonourable and condemnable act. Shame on you, Osu.

You did not deserve to win and go on to become the Chief Minister.

SET UP HOMELAND SECURITY MINISTRY TO BETTER PROTECT SABAH – JEFFREY

Set up Homeland Security Ministry to better protect Sabah – Jeffrey

KOTA KINABALU 2/12/2012: The state government need to take drastic and urgent steps to ensure the better security of Sabah and its people and should immediately set up a Homeland Security Ministry to complement and supplement the shortcomings of the federal agencies in protecting the people in Sabah.

This was suggested by STAR Sabah chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan at the launching of the STAR Sabah, Ranau election machinery in Kaingaran, and in response to the murder of teenager Norikon Saliwa in Kota Marudu recently.

Dr Jeffrey stressed that one of the key factors why Sabah was pushed to the merger and formation of Malaysia in 1963 was the security threats from Indonesia and Philippines and that Malaysia when formed, would take care of Sabah security.

I REMEMBER WHEN: I GREW UP IN THE 1980S

I REMEMBER WHEN: I grew up in the 1980s

THE NEW WAVE: The 1980s was a prosperous period in the nation’s history. We saw the production of the first Made-in-Malaysia car — the Proton Saga, enjoyed watching a slew of western television shows with the introduction of TV3 and benefited from the silicon revolution which brought computers into mainstream Malaysian society. Against this backdrop, the 1980s child had a relatively good time growing up. Arman Ahmad walks down memory lane as he reminisces about things which left a mark on his life
