Transport Minister under fire from Sabah leaders

KOTA KINABALU 20/12/2012: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has come under fire from Sabah leaders over the shutdown of work by Global Upline Sdn Bhd (GUSB), the contractor of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) development.

Barisan Nasional (BN) Putatan member of parliament Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh was of the opinion that GUSB’s statement about the reason why it had stopped work on the airport expansion project proved that the Transport Ministry is irresponsible.

He was also worried about the safety aspects of the airport based on GUSB’s statement which read, ‘in the interest of safety to aircraft operation and passengers alike, we would like to inform the public that the runway is not safe for landing, take-off and other operation since it has been certified non-complete by MOT. The runway shall be forthwith closed for operation’.

Lajim: Issuance of documents to illegals getting out of hand

Beaufort 07/10/2012: Chairman of the Sabah Reform Alliance (PPPS) Datuk Lajim Ukin alleged that the influx of illegals and issuance of ICs as well as birth certificates to foreigners in this country is getting out of control under the BN to the extent of affecting the rights of indigenous people of Sabah.

The former Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government also claimed that there were about 40,000 birth certificates issued to children of illegal immigrants in Semporna in the past, which must be resolved immediately.

"There has been a report that 40,000 birth certificates have been issued in that area and it is feared that one day it will be detrimental to Sabah, including national security if not addressed properly.

TAWAU 08/12/2012: Pihak berkuasa tempatan diminta membanteras kegiatan warga asing yang berniaga di pasar-pasar di daerah ini, baik di pasar yang dikendalikan oleh kerajaan mahupun yang diswastakan.

Ahli Parlimen Kalabakan Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh berkata, kegiatan tersebut dilihat boleh menjejaskan pendapatan para peniaga tempatan kerana mereka terpaksa bersaing dengan ‘orang luar’ dalam melaksanakan perniagaan mereka.

Menurutnya, beliau ada menerima aduan daripada para peniaga tentang perkara berkenaan seperti kewujudan para peniaga dari negara China di Pasar Sin On.

Ongkili visits murdered teen's family

Kota Marudu 29/11/2012: Kota Marudu MP Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili visited the parents and family members of a 16-year-old schoolgirl, suspected of being murdered, at their home here, Wednesday, to express his condolences.

Ongkili, who is also Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, assured the family that the police were conducting a thorough and speedy investigation into the death of Norikoh Saliwah whose body was found by the roadside, near Kampung Ranau, on Sunday. Ongkili, who visited the family at their home in Kampung Bombong 1 with Tandek Assemblyman Anita Baranting, had been briefed by the district police on the case on Tuesday night.

"The post-mortem has revealed a cracked skull but no sign of rape on the victim.

"Police have not ruled out that she might have been killed and a suspect has been arrested," he said.

Kota Kinabalu 28/11/2012: Eight of the 20 police districts in Sabah are currently headed by Sabah-born police officers, according to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Haji Yusop.

He said three of them are heading Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau Police Districts each with the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), while the rest are in Keningau, Kinabatangan, Papar, Semporna and Sipitang each with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

In terms of ethnic background, he said two of them are Dusun, while another two Kadazan, two Malays, one Murut and a Bajau.

KOTA KINABALU 23/11/2012: The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the fraudulent issuance of citizenship to illegal immigrants has hardly got off the ground but has already run into controversy.

Its move to call for testimony for witnesses at its “whim and fancy” will render its investigation far short of what the people of Sabah are expecting, an MP from Sabah said today.

“The commission must conduct an open hearing to give opportunities for the public who want to offer testimonies without restriction,”

TAMPARULI 10/11/2012: The Royal Commission of Inquiry on the presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah must be allowed to carry out its job before the 13th general election.

Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) president Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred M Bumburing in making the call said this would ensure that the electoral rolls would be purged of illegal voters.

Speaking at a Pakatan Rakyat-APS public seminar here recently, the Tuaran member of parliament urged the federal government to let the RCI on illegal immigrants to completely carry out their functions and finish their job before the 13th general election was called.

“This will thereafter pave the way for the electoral rolls to be rectified and cleaned up by getting rid of any illegal voters. In this respect, the RCI must immediately begin their job in order to complete their job in time.

KOTA KINABALU 8/11/2012: Sabah roads may not be suited for the expensive and controversial Automatic Enforcement System (AES) which the government is planning to install nationwide to reduce road accidents.

A Sabah MP pointed out that the poor infrastructure and conditions of roads in the east Malaysian state should be addressed first before the expensive AES project is implemented.

“It is pointless for the government to spend a huge sum of the taxpayers’ money to install such a sophisticated system, when in the first place it can’t even provide a good and safer road for the people to drive on,”

Deputy HR minister, Senator Maznah Mazlan, said that 1.403 million foreigners here held the Temporary Employment Visit Pass, contributing to 11.2% of Malaysia’s total workforce.

The high rate of poverty in Sabah indicates that government allocations are not reaching the targetted groups.

KOTA KINABALU 22/10/2012: MP for Tawau Chua Soon Bui has accused the federal government of cooking up figures to show poverty in the state was on a downward trend.

She said that it was obvious that the government’s poverty eradication programmes were not having the desired effect given that figures showed there had been an increase in the number of hardcore poor between 2004 and 2009.

KOTA KINABALU 11/10/2012: Sepanggar member of parliament Datuk Eric Majimbun accused the federal government of applying a different set of procedures when dealing with Sabah-born Malaysians and foreign-borns registering for birth certificates in the state.

He said the procedures adopted by Kuala Lumpur marginalised and discriminated against the people of Sabah, particularly those in the rural areas where many children do not have birth certificate.

Majimbun further alleged that when these applicants, with the assistance of local community leaders, finally get their documents, the National Registration Department (NRD) would stamp in red ink, the words ‘Late Registration’.

KUALA LUMPUR 2/10/2012: The presence of 889,770 legal and illegal foreigners in Sabah is not a threat to the country or the state's security and order, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

He said that while national population growth was 2.5% annually, the growth in Sabah was higher.

"The population growth rate is higher in Sabah compared to Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia for several reasons, including the presence of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries," he said in response to a question by Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing (Tuaran) on whether the presence of 800,000 foreigners in Sabah posed a threat to national safety and security.

Five road projects in Sabah to be done by year-end

2/10/2012: FIVE small high-impact projects being implemented along Jalan Kota Kinabalu to Sindumin, Sabah, are expected to be completed by year-end, the house was told yesterday.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng said the projects involved resurfacing of roads, building overtaking lanes, raising the road levels and upgrading accident-prone spots.

"The government is committed and gives priority to improving the road system and developing infrastructure in Sabah," he said in reply to Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh (BN-Kalabakan), who had asked when Jalan Kota Kinabalu/Beaufort to Sindumin would be upgraded to a dual carriageway.
