Ranau has had a string of elected representatives at state and federal levels over the past 40 years but clean water has remained elusive.
Ranau MP Siringan Gubat said villagers in his constituency have been relying on dirty water for their domestic use.
Speaking after a protest last week by some 60-odd villagers, Gubat said: “The people are relying on the water supply from the state-owned agency Rural Development Corporation (KPD) which is only meant for farming. This water is not fit for human consumption.”
Poverty in Ranau: Who’s lying?
An Upko MP's concern about the high incidences of abject poverty in Sabah's Ranau district is in contrast to an Umno assemblyman's public denial.
RANAU July 5, 2012: Barisan Nasional representatives are at odds over the status of Ranau district in central Sabah which hosts multiple cases of extreme poverty. Ranau is also surrounded by areas that are poverty-stricken, an anomaly by itself in a state blessed with bountiful oil and gas.
Ranau MP Siringan Gubat, a member of BN component, Upko, recently told Parliament that the incidence of poverty in Ranau was ‘worrying’.
But much earlier in April, Keranaan assemblyman, Masidi Manjun of Umno denied this, saying Ranau cannot be the poorest district as development was taking place there.

He believed Sabah DAP Secretary, Dr Edwin Bosi, was just trying to divert the people's attention on this matter by talking about the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants, which the Government is now attending to, and other things instead.

RM12.54 mln for cocoa replanting nationwide
SANDAKAN May 16, 2012: The government has sanctioned RM12.54 million to plant high-yield cocoa trees in 1,567 hectares nationwide, cocoa board of directors chairman Datuk Siringan Gubat said yesterday.
Of the total hectarage, 750 hectares are identified in Sabah, with 300 hectares in Ranau district, 200 hectares in Tenom), 150 hectares (north and west coasts) and 100 hectares (east coast), he said.
BN has support to retain all Ranau seats – chairman
RANAU April 26, 2012: The Ranau Barisan Nasional (BN) will have no problem in defending the Ranau parliamentary seat and the state seats of Paginatan, Karanaan and Kundasang if the outcome of their election dry run early this year is any indication.
Its chairman, Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, who is also Paginatan assemblyman, said the result of the mock election showed that 21,974 or 63 percent of the overall 35,177 voters here are still supporting the BN.

March 24, 2011 A frustrated Barisan Nasional parliamentarian in Sabah wants his constituency re-delineated so that villagers can enjoy a fairer distribution of allocations.
KOTA KINABALU: Ranau MP Siringan Gubat has finally thrown in the towel and wants the Election Commission (EC) to divide his constituency into two parliamentary segments.
He also wants the EC to add another state constituency to make it four from the current three simply because he cannot cope with the workload.
Siringan said his constituency is too big for him to handle alone and should be re-delineated.
“I have an MP been for years and have tried to visit more of these villages, but out of the 213 I had only visited 129 of them…” he said.
Gubat said that with the current parliamentary term expected to end soon, “there are still 100 villages I have yet visited.”
Siringan justified the need for the extra parliamentary and state assembly seat.
He said for nearly half of the year the MPs would be attending Parliament and had little time to attend to or visit all their constitiuents.
Fairer distribution
By dividing the constituency, he said, the people in Ranau would enjoy a much fairer distribution of allocation for the implementation of rural development projects.
The geographical size of Ranau and the increase in its population had left it far behind in terms of basic development, he said.
The MP admitted that district administration and management could not cope.
“Ranau parliamentary constituency area is 3,555.9 square kilometres, about 4.5 times bigger than the state of Perlis and also much wider than Malacca,” he said during a motion of thanks to the Yang Dipertuan Agong’s opening address in the Dewan Rakyat recently.
The constituency has 213 registered villages that are managed by a village development and security committees (JKKK) and village heads.
Most of the traditional villages are spread out and lack good access roads. Some can only be reached via boats.
According to him the population of the constituency has also increased. Based on the 2010 census the population gone up by 24,947 people from 70,685 in 2000.
Siringan said the EC record showed that there were 30,810 voters.
Of the state constituencies under his care, Kundasang has 9,639 voters, Keranaan 11,087 voters and Paginatan, 10,084.
500,000 visitors to National Park and rising: Pairin

Ranau: More than half a million people visited the National Park last year and the number is expected to increase as the district has many more tourist attractions.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said about 252,254 people were recorded coming to Kinabalu Park and another 278,300 to the Poring Hot Spring last year.
"I am sure many were not recorded and if the actual number could be obtained it would show an encouraging rise in the number of visitors to the district," he said at the Ranau Kaamatan Festival celebration at the Community Centre, Sunday.
Pairin, who is also the Infrastructure Development Minister, urged residents in the district to find ways and take advantage of the situation.
He suggested that they go for the homestay programme, which was a favourite among European tourists.
Apart from that, the production of unique handicrafts from the district could be boosted and he hoped the district Kemas and handicraft management in Kampung Matan here as well as together with the relevant agencies would work harder to get more people to become skilled handicraftsman.
Meanwhile, former Works Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Gilong hailing from Kg Lingkudau Ranau received the Luguan Kaamatan Award (Tokoh Kaamatan) from Pairin who is also Huguan Siou.

MP: Why refer to KL even for a school placement?
Ranau MP Datuk Siringan Gubat made the call in the wake of a case involving a student of SMK Ranau in Ranau who was asked to write a letter of appeal to the Bahagian Pengurusan Sekolah Berasrama Penuh dan Sekolah Kluster at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, just to be considered for a place at a fully residential school in Sabah.
The student who scored 8As in last year's Lower Secondary Assessment Test (PMR) had initially applied to further her study at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) in Kinarut, but failed to get a place there.
Refusing to give up she then applied to study at Sekolah Menengah Sains Berasrama Penuh in Bukit Padang here but again failed.
She appealed and was asked to write a letter of appeal to the said Director of Bahagian Pengurusan Sekolah Berasrama Penuh dan Sekolah Kluster in Putrajaya for consideration. To date she is still studying at the same school.
Her case was referred to Siringan in Parliament recently, asking the Ministry concerned to give a bit of power to the State Education Director to handle and make decisions on such small matters.
"Why does such a small matter need to be referred to and decided at the Ministry-level?
We all know Putrajaya is not that near for people particularly from a place like Ranau to reach easilyÉeven via a letter it would be not that easy to get an answer," said Siringan.
He said giving the State Education Director power to solve such small matters would benefit the people in Sabah because this would speed up the process.
He believed many others had also experienced the same thing and who after being asked to make an appeal to Putrajaya lost interest to proceed and left things be.

I have so many Muslims in my own family, especially in Ranau and other places as far as in Kuala Lumpur.

Siringan questions non-action on illegal workers
Kota Kinabalu January 03, 2010: Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Siringan Gubat called on the Federal Government to be more serious in solving the problem of illegal immigrant workers in the State. He said the Home Ministry had promised to carry out "Ops Bersepadu" to weed out illegal immigrant workers in Sabah after a special amnesty granted to them which had expired last October.
"However, nothing seems to have been done about it since the expiry of the amnesty," he said.
Siringan, who is also Upko Vice President, was referring to the special amnesty granted to illegal immigrant workers in Sabah whereby they were given until October last year to register or face arrest and deportation if they failed to do so.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was reported on Sept 10 as saying the last reminder for the illegals in Sabah to register would be until end of that month and action would be taken after that.
The Government had made various efforts to encourage the illegals to be registered, including reducing the levy on foreign workers by 50 per cent and extending the registration period, said Hishammuddin, adding the first of the three phases of the amnesty was carried out since last year.
"I am wondering what had happened after the expiry of the special amnesty. Together with fellow Sabahan Members of Parliament, we have asked about this in Parliament whether the special amnesty was extended or there is a new policy made by the Government, but no answers were given," said Siringan.
"The Government also promised to launch 'Ops Bersepadu' upon the expiry of the said special amnesty, but it seems nothing was done," he said.
Siringan said the Government needs to be more serious about this and should not just leave it to the enforcement authorities.

“Kupon ini sama seperti wang tunai. Jadi tidak ada sebab kenapa ia tidak diterima (oleh peruncit) dan untuk mendapatkan wang tunai peruncit hanya perlu menyerahkan kupon kepada pemborong dan mereka akan diberikan wang tunai,”
