ONLY ONE CANCER TREATMENT MACHINE IN SABAH?

28/12/2012: DAP Sabah is extremely disappointed that Sabah health care welfare continues to be overlooked. Junz Wong, DAP Sabah State Assistant Secretary expressed disappointment at State Health department that they have not resolved the "one radiotherapy machine" issue since DAP Sabah has brought it up one year ago.

Junz disclosed that Ex-Director Dr Mohd Yusof Ibrahim has openly announced, in a newspaper replying to DAP Sabah, that Sabah would have three CT Scan machines by the end of 2012. Two machines would be sent to Likas Hospital while one would be sent to Lahad Datu Hospital.

"Today is 27 Dec and yet Sabah still face the same issue which we have raised a year ago via why there is only one cancer treatment machine in Sabah? Situation has worsened now that Sabahan patients are asked to look for private specialist for treatments!" Junz slammed.

KOTA KINABALU 27/12/2012: Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Sabah diminta untuk menjalankan siasatan terperinci berhubung berikutan insiden yang berlaku di hospital Lahad Datu, dimana pesakit warga tua telah dibekalkan ubat yang telah luput tempoh penggunaannya.

“Perkara seperti ini sepatutnya tidak akan berlaku dan ini harus dipandang serius oleh Jabatan berkenaan kerana ianya melibatkan kesihatan pengguna. Ubat yang digunakan selepas tarikh luput berkemungkinan besar bertukar menjadi bahan yang berbahaya yang boleh memudaratkan kepada kesihatan manusia,” kata Presiden Pertubuhan Hal Ehwal dan Perlindungan Pengguna Sabah (CAPS), James Baga .

KOTA KINABALU 18/12/2012: The incidence of red tide in Papar, Tuaran, Tasik Sitompok (Kuala Penyu) and here is still at a worrying level.

Fisheries Department senior officer (head of the quality division), Boniface Jintony told The Borneo Post yesterday that the concentration of toxic algal blooms remained high at the affected areas.

“The incident began late November this year and has remained high,” he said.

He added that when the situation returns to normal, the department would issue another reminder to tell consumers that the red tide incident is over.

Dr Jerip: Smuggled cigarettes hamper anti-smoking campaigns

KUCHING 14/12/2012: The constant flow of contraband cigarettes from Kalimantan is making it more difficult to persuade smokers to quit.

Assistant Public Health Minister Dr Jerip Susil said that the government had set up stop-smoking clinics in major medical centres throughout the state, offering medical assistance to smokers to kick the habit through counselling, replacement therapy using nicotine pads and tablets in its efforts to curb smoking in the state.

However, this effort to cut down smoking is thwarted by cheap smuggled cigarettes sold openly in the streets.

KOTA KINABALU 13/12/2012: The Department of Fisheries yesterday advised the people across the state to refrain from consuming any type of shellfish or bivalves immediately following the detection of red tide in the west coast of Sabah.

In issuing the red tide warning, the department’s director Rayner Stuel Galid also advised the public to refrain from collecting shellfish and bivalves from the sea areas in the west coast with the intention to eat or sell them.

“If consumers do wish to eat bivalve shellfish, they are advised to make certain that these bivalves are not obtained from the waters off the west coast of Sabah,”

KOTA KINABALU 09/12/2012:  If everything goes well, a Sabah Transplant Resource Centre will be set up at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I soon.

Sabah Health Department director Dr Christina Rundi in disclosing this, hoped that through the setting up of the centre, they would be able to create greater awareness on the importance of organ donation among the people.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Organ Donation Promotion Campaign for Sabah here yesterday, Christina said that apart from promoting the programme to the public, they must first educate their staff on the matter.

“It is important for the staff to understand organ donation to ensure the success of this programme,”

KUALA LUMPUR 6 Dis. - Kementerian Kesihatan akan meningkatkan usaha pengesanan penyakit tibi dalam kalangan warga asing yang didapati menjadi pembawa utama penyakit itu di Sabah.

Timbalan Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin (gambar) berkata, setakat sembilan bulan pertama tahun ini, jumlah kes tibi yang dilaporkan di negeri itu adalah sebanyak 3,275 kes.

Menurut beliau, penularan kes tibi di Sabah dikesan sejak 2005 iaitu sebanyak 3,395, bertambah kepada 3,728 kes (2010) dan terus meningkat kepada 3,794 kes pada 2011.

"Pertambahan kes tibi ini juga disebabkan aktiviti pengesanan kes yang cukup agresif sejak kebelakangan ini,"

KUALA LUMPUR 21/11/2012: Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) mengumumkan enam produk mi segera jenama Shin Ramyun yang dikeluarkan Kumpulan Nongshim mengandungi bahan penyebab barah iaitu Benzopyrene.

Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan Perubatan KKM, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah berkata, kementerian sudah mengambil empat sampel produk itu untuk diuji parameter Benzopyrene dan keputusan menunjukkan bahan itu dikesan dalam tiga daripada empat serbuk sup.

“Benzopyrene biasanya ditemui dalam asap rokok, makanan yang dibakar, dipanggang atau disalai dan bahan ini juga hasil sampingan dalam pelbagai industri pemprosesan,”

Kuching 12/11/2012: Pelajar yang menggunakan cuti sekolah untuk melayari laman sosial Facebook selama tiga hingga tujuh jam sehari dibimbangi mengidap kemurungan pada masa depan.

Risiko kemurungan membabitkan kesihatan mental berlaku kerana kurang pergaulan sosial, justeru, apabila tiba masa berdikari, golongan terbabit berdepan masalah menyerap tekanan ketika bekerja akibat kelemahan menguasai keadaan sekeliling, iaitu ‘copy skills’.

Pengarah Hospital Sentosa, Dr Lau Kim Kah, berkata bagi mengelak keadaan itu, ibu bapa perlu menggalakkan anak mereka keluar bersosial secara sihat khususnya ketika musim sekolah, supaya kemahiran menguasai tekanan dapat dipelajari.

KOTA KINABALU 3/11/2012: Patients are prescribed with short-term dosages of medicine due to delay on the suppliers’ side and the rapid increase in the demand for certain types of medicines.

State health director Datuk Dr Yusof Haji Ibrahim said in a reply to Sabah Progressive Party’s (SAPP) demand that the government explain the shortage of medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), said the problem was only temporary.

“There is a shortage in the supply of certain types of medicines, especially for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, etc., but it is only temporary and the hospital is taking various measures to help counter this issue,”

KUALA LUMPUR 1/11/2012: To her mother, it is heavenly music when cancer-stricken Ngeo Jia Yee gently runs her frail fingers over an electronic keyboard.

The instrument was presented to the 11-year-old by a well-wisher who was touched by her musical talent and interest.

Jia Yee cannot see the keys but her fingers flew over the keyboard as she played the sweet strains of Auld Lang Syne and other lilting tunes.

A study showed that despite relatively high cigarette prices and low annual tobacco consumption, 36.3% of boys aged 13 to 15 still smoked.

PETALING JAYA 20/10/2012: More than a third of Malaysian boys aged between 13 and 15 smoke, according to a global study on tobacco smoking .

The Tobacco Atlas showed that 36.3% of schoolboys here smoked cigarettes, making Malaysia one of the top countries in the world with the highest smoking rates amongst male teenagers in this age range.

Kuala Lumpur 20/10/2012: Seramai 1,681 daripada 8,000 jururawat lulusan kolej swasta yang menganggur akan diserapkan di sebanyak 130 hospital kerajaan bermula akhir tahun ini.

Pengambilan akan diteruskan sehingga 6,724 jururawat diserap ke hospital kerajaan menjelang 2015 dan bakinya dicadang mengikuti skim penempatan singkat atau skim latihan 1Malaysia (SL1M) bagi membolehkan mereka bekerja dengan hospital swasta, termasuk di luar negara.

KOTA KINABALU 18/10/2012: Malaysians should eat less white sugar as there is a proven link with cancer growth in humans.

Health consultant and lecturer Dr Sivakumar Kumaresan told The Borneo Post that it was actually a positive effort by the government when it announced the reduction in subsidy for sugar recently.

“Malaysians eat a lot of sugar. And we have a lot of hidden diabetics in Malaysia. We suffer what is known as metabolic imbalance and it is a precursor to diabetes,” he said.
