LAHAD DATU: ESSZONE SET UP TO HALT INCURSIONS

Lahad Datu: Esszone set up to halt incursions

By FARIK ZOLKEPLI and AUSTIN CAMOENS

.KUALA LUMPUR 26/03/2013: The Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone) to prevent incursions and ensure the security of the state has been formed.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that it comprised 10 districts Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.

The zone, he said, would be administered by the Esszone Committee chaired by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, with its headquarters in Lahad Datu.

“He (Musa) will be assisted by a chief executive officer and other members to be announced later,” he said during the 206th Police Day Celebrations at the Police Training Academy yesterday.

Najib said the formation of the safety zone was in line with the setting up of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), aimed at safeguarding eastern Sabah.

“The establishment of Esszone does not constitute a declaration of emergency. It will not prevent free and democratic elections from taking place in the area involved.”

It is learnt Esscom would act as an authoritative body for the Esszone. For example, any activity, be it social or security efforts in the safety zone, would be coordinated through Esscom.

CRACKS APPEARING IN SABAH UMNO?

Cracks appearing in Sabah Umno?

A Sabah NGO - United Suluk Community Organisation (USCO) - has, strangely enough, decided to move into ‘active’ politics.

KUDAT 22/03/2013: Speculation is high that former deputy chief minister under a PBS-plus government, Amir Kahar Mustapha, is about to quit Umno and join an opposition group.

The former Banggi assemblyman, who is the eldest son of ex- Sabah chief minister, the late Tun Mustapha Harun, is said to have been approached by the members of the Suluk community here to represent them in the opposition in the coming election.

Sabah BN leaders back early announcement of candidates

KOTA KINABALU 28/10/2012:  Early announcement of Barisan Nasional line-up will allow candidates and their machinery to plan their next move and ensure victory for the ruling party.

In welcoming the proposal by BN secretary general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to announce their candidacies earlier than past elections, Parti Bersatu Sabah Youth chief Datuk Jahid Jahim said doing so would enable them to strategise their moves and be able to befriend their would-be constituents.

“The candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves, if they are new, while the incumbents should renew ties with their voters by continuing to go down to the ground and listen to the people’s grouses,”

NAJIB’S PSY-WAR BUDGET

2/10/2012: The salient traits of the budget unveiled on Sept 28 by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak are a continuation of Budget 2012 as far as the politics of psychology is concerned.

SABAH: STILL A ‘FIXED DEPOSIT’?

Sabah: Still a ‘fixed deposit’?

image 21 September 2012: Sabah will be a focal point in the coming general election, especially after the defections of two BN MPs. If the opposition can avoid contesting three-cornered contests then Sabah’s status as a BN ‘fixed deposit’ state could hang in the balance, writes Arnold Puyok.

The upcoming 13th General Election is sure to be a hotly contested election. It will be a litmus test for Prime Minister Najib Razak who is banking on his “transformational agenda” to return the BN to power.

Indeed, to restore the BN to a two-thirds majority. For PR, the election is seen as Anwar Ibrahim’s last chance to take over Putrajaya after the alleged September 16 coup failed. Even though many of the seats contested come from Peninsular Malaysia, the real battle will be in Sabah and Sarawak.

NAJIB’S TECH ‘ARMY’ GEARING FOR BATTLE

Najib’s tech ‘army’ gearing for battle

Not well known, or appreciated, is the fact that Najib Tun Razak is a first-rate copywriter with a folksy and populist writing style.

September 21, 2012: Going into a defining 13th general election, politically savvy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is leaving nothing to chance; and that includes use of technology, social media and budgets.

The opposition estimates that Najib’s election budget will hit RM2 billion in the next six months to propagate himself and his government’s achievements.

SABAH, SARAWAK SHOULD HAVE PANEL FOR ROYALTY REVIEW

Sabah, Sarawak should have panel for royalty review – Dompok

image PENAMPANG August 28, 2012: Sabah and Sarawak should have their own panel to look into the oil royalty review for both states, said United Pasokmomogun KadazanDusun Murut Organization (UPKO) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok .

The Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister said this when asked to comment on the suggestion to have the two East Malaysian states included in the special committee to review the oil royalty paid to Terengganu and Kelantan by the federal government.

“Sabah and Sarawak should have their own panel to talk to the federal government. It is not necessary to be part of the panel for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Obviously the historical setting is quite different both for Sabah and Sarawak and the peninsula states. Therefore I think it is necessary to have a separate panel for these two (East Malaysian) states,” Dompok said.

DR M DOING BN MORE HARM THAN GOOD?

Dr M doing BN more harm than good

July 17, 2012: The former premier's comments on vernacular education has got the Indian and Chinese fuming.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s critical comments on the existence of Tamil and Chinese schools in this country has drawn an unprecedented tirade against him from the Tamil media, with many Indian leaders firing salvos at the former premier for his unacceptable stand.

In a recent interview with Utusan Malaysia, Mahathir’s comments suggested that vernacular schools should be abolished to have one single education system.

Everyone was surprised because during his tenure of 22 years as the premier of this country no one remembered such remarks coming from him. Knowing the political dangers of making such statements as a prime minister, Mahathir never seriously ventured into the arena of vernacular school education during his days.

PENSIONERS JOINING PAS BECAUSE OF RELIGION?

Pensioners joining PAS because of Islam, says party veep

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — PAS believes retired government officials are joining as members because the Islamist party fights for the religion but an analyst said others have joined Umno without any publicity, reflecting the crucial role of the civil service vote in the next general elections.

Putrajaya employs nearly 1.4 million people nationwide while another 500,000 are pensioners in a civil service dominated mainly by Malays, who form 60 per cent of the country’s population. Islam is the country’s official religion and all Malays must be Muslims.

Jeffrey’s twin ‘thorns’ – Bumburing, SAPP

STAR chairman Jeffrey Kitingan is resigned to the fact that his party will face multi-cornered fights 'everywhere' they contest in the 13th GE.

KOTA KINABALU July 5, 2012: Veteran politician Jeffrey Kitingan is bracing his team for a multi-cornered fight in Sabah, now that Upko deputy president Wilfred Bumburing has denied rumours of him joining PKR.

Returning home after yet another ‘fruitless’ meeting with Pakatan Rakyat officials in KL recently, Kitingan, who heads the Sabah chapter of the State Reform Party (STAR), said this would be the “logical” road for them to take.

“We will keep trying to negotiate and discuss, but we will prepare for a multi-cornered fight. I feel this will be a logical road for STAR,” he told FMT.

SOCIAL MEDIA CRIMPING LYNAS IN MALAYSIA, SAYS CEO

Social media crimping Lynas in Malaysia, says CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Facebook and Twitter have hobbled Lynas Corp’s RM2.5 billion plan to fire up the world’s biggest rare earth refinery in Malaysia, the Australian miner’s chief executive Nicholas Curtis told Bloomberg, warning Putrajaya foreign businesses were rethinking plans to plant their money here.

In an interview published today, Curtis told the business wire that he had underestimated the power of Facebook and Twitter to rally opposition to the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) here, which has been slapped with further conditions, delaying its operational start-up and which cause it to lose up to A$10 million (RM32 million) a month.

“I’d have dealt with the emerging community debate by the social media a little bit more intensely, a little bit earlier,” Curtis(picture) told Bloomberg, in hindsight.

“We probably didn’t recognise the power of the social media to create an issue.”
