No need for federal fund with higher oil royalty – STAR
KOTA KINABLU Feb 15, 2012: State Reform Party (STAR) said that with a higher oil royalty of 50 per cent for Sabah, the state would not even need anymore federal allocation.
Its deputy chairman, Daniel John Jambun, said this in response to the query by Sabah Barisan Nasional secretary Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan who expressed worry that Sabah would be worse off than what it is in now should the federal allocation under the Malaysia Plan be reduced.
“Abdul Rahman is forgetting that under the 10th Malaysia Plan, Sabah and Sarawak combined are getting only about RM9 billion as compared to about RM100 billion for the Peninsular,” Jambun pointed out.
“At this rate of allocation, Sabah is actually getting less than RM1 billion per year throughout the five-year Malaysia Plan. As such, the federal allocations are not much and hardly fulfil all the development needs of Sabah.”
Jambun also said that if the BN government is replaced by the opposition in Sabah, the state will also be asking for the original promised right to allow it to collect and manage its own revenues, including taxes.
“Taxes collected from Sabah alone amounts from RM15 to RM20 billion per year, so just imagine how much we are losing at the moment,” he said. “So combined that with the retention of income from oil by way of 50 per cent royalty, the income for Sabah per year would be in the tens of billions per year. So why would we need anymore allocation from Sabah?”
He said with such a huge revenue base, Sabah would be able to take care of its own education, health and even security costs.
“In fact Sabah would be a very rich state and would reach a developed status within a decade or two,” he added.
“So it is a pity that the BN leaders still have this outdated thinking that we must depend on the federal government forever to develop, whereas the real solution is right in our own backyard.”
Sabah and Sarawak still deserves to get the Federal Governmental funds whether or not the royalties have increased or not. How could Jeffrey say such a thing?
BalasPadamI believe the royalties and the federal funds are equally important.
PadamIndeed good if Sabah can stand on his own rather than rely on the federal. If the state revenue being increase, surely its help to development and expansion.
PadamNot because we need to depend on the Federal Government to develop, Sabah and Sarawak rightfully deserves the funds as we are equal partners of Malaya. We want the oil royalties as well as the federal funds. Why should we settle for less than what we deserves, Jeffrey?
BalasPadamSabah is a bigger state compare to the rest in Malaysia, we definitely need more allocation in order to develop it better.
Padamsabah need more allocation to be on par with other states in malaysia.
Padamthe people deserve higher percentage of royalty as well as higher allocation from the government.
BalasPadamHope that we can achieve a positive outcome.
BalasPadamsabah deserve more since sabah is one of the main contribution to malaysia's development.
Padam1 hari nanti jika Sabah kehabisan minyak, apa mahu buat???
Padamgood point. JK should had thought about what would happen if the oil finish. Eventually oil will finish, then what will happen to sabah if there were no federal funds given if sabah only depend on the oil royalty.
PadamAgenda Borneo JK memang menarik tapi mampu ka STAR memerintah sebuah negeri.
BalasPadamNo need federal fund? We still need fund for other development.
BalasPadamBuat masa kini, bantu kerajaan masih diperlukan.
BalasPadamwe can't just depend on oil royalty alone to develop sabah. We still need funding from the government. More allocation so that sabah could quickly be on par with the wm states.
BalasPadamcouldn't agree more with your comment. the opposition are only giving us a short term planning. its still unsure yet whether they could get the oil royalty increased.
BalasPadamsabah will quickly be developed with more funds and a higher percentage of oil royalty.
BalasPadamsometimes the opposition doesn't make any sense. Their promises sometimes are not logical enough although it may sound good and promising but its still not enough to convince the people.
PadamJK didn't think it thoroughly before making his statement.
BalasPadamsabah deserve the federal fund even if the oil royalty were to be increased to 50%. It will be such a big waste if sabah didn't get the funds. Funds and royalty and equally important.
