REACTIONS TO ‘1 COUNTRY, 2 SYSTEMS’

Reactions to ‘1 country, 2 systems’

KUCHING August 19, 2011: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing described United Borneo Front (UBF) founder Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan’s advocacy for Malaysia to be “one country, two systems” as divisive and dangerous.

He said the proposal was against the objective of the formation of Malaysia and should be rejected outright by all peace-loving Malaysians.

“His (Dr Jeffery) view is very dangerous for nation building because we already are moving forward as one nation under 1Malaysia.

“To think otherwise means that he wants to break up this country. This, we should never allow,” Masing told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

“LET US ALL DO SOMETHING TO STOP THIS “MOTHER OF ALL THREATS” BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.”

Campaign to stop ‘mother of all threats’

February 25, 2011 SAPP embarks on a signature drive demanding a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the massive illegal immigrants problem in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: All Malaysians regardless of whether they were born in Sabah should support a signature campaign demanding for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on how illegal immigrants obtained citizenships en masse in the state.

The Sabah Progressive Peoples Party (SAPP), in making the call, said the signature campaign was to protect the sovereignty and future of the country.

The party’s Api-Api youth chief, Pang Thien Fook, said this was important as the issue had been going on for almost three decades without closure and had adversely affected the politics and socio-economic environment of Sabah in particular, and Malaysia as a whole.

“It is an undeniable fact that the continuous presence of a huge number of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries like Philippines and Indonesia have became citizens through dubious means.

“The infamous ‘Project IC’ especially, has significantly eroded or usurped the rights of the bona fide citizens in many aspects, from politics to socio-economy.

“There is also constant danger of the sovereignty and security of this country being compromised at any time,” he said.

Pang stressed that Malaysians must wake up and stop the ruling government from constantly abusing and manipulating the electoral process to stay in power.

He said going by the Sabah precedent, the recent accusation by blogger Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib that Umno aimed to deploy the same modus operandi in Selangor to recapture the opposition Pakatan Rakyat ruled state is valid.

Pang claimed that ‘dubious citizens’ dubbed the ‘fixed deposit’ for Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah have migrated to Peninsular Malaysia.

Target: 100,000 signatures

SAPP’s signature campaign is due to a recent statement by Home Affairs Minister Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, who denied there was a problem and as such a need to up a Royal commission of Inquiry on the matter.

The campaign which was launched last week is aiming to secure at least 100,000 signatures by the end of next month.

SAPP has already collected more than 11,000 signatures statewide, both online and on the ground via its mobile service booths in various districts.

To push the point home, Pang reminded Malaysians and Sabahans in particular, of a speech by anti-Nazi activist Pastor Martin Niemöller who said:

“When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat.

“When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn’t a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.”

Said Pang: “Let us all do something to stop this “mother of all threats” before it’s too late.”

SEGALA PERMASALAHAN YANG DIHADAPI OLEH RAKYAT HENDAKLAH DISELESAIKAN SECEPAT MUNGKIN DI PERINGKAT AKAR UMBI BUKAN MENUNGGU SEHINGGA TIBANYA PILIHAN RAYA UMUM. - NAJIB

Ketua Kampung Serta Anggota JKKK Penghubung Antara Rakyat Dan Kerajaan

“KAMI ORANG MISKIN, TAK PERGI SEKOLAH, TAPI KAMI BUKAN BODOH”

In bad shape: The Penans at the Lusong Laku settlement want the logging company to repair their longhouses which look more like cow sheds.

An insult – that’s how Penans view the “gift” of a wooden bridge as a farewell present from a multi-billion ringgit company after it left Bakun.

Kami orang miskin, tak pergi sekolah, tapi kami bukan bodoh. Ini towkay-towkay, jangan cuba nak buat kami malu. (We may be poor and uneducated but we are not stupid people. Don’t shame us like this),’’

“This has been our home for hundreds of years,’’

“Before the logging, we lived peacefully. We had enough food to live on our own in the jungle.

“These logging companies have destroyed our lives. Now, we are always short of food. Many of us cannot find jobs and we have no income.”

“This wooden bridge is weak. It will be swept away once the floods come and the water level rises. We want a better structure,’’

Penan chief of the Lusong Laku settlement, Penghulu Jati Jarang, said his people felt hurt and humiliated

DR GEORGE CHAN TERKEJUT LAPORAN PENAN KEKURANGAN MAKANAN

Lima penempatan terbabit ialah Long Abit, Long Kajang, Long Tanyit, Long Malin, dan Long Lidem.

KL AGREES TO MATCH MRP FUND WITH FEDERAL GRANT

KUCHING, June 19, 2009: The federal government has agreed in principle to continue matching the state assemblymen’s minor rural project (MRP) fund with that of the federal’s grant.

image Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said this when asked if MRP fund increase was among the topics discussed at the state Barisan Nasional (BN) meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a hotel here yesterday.

image “The prime minister said he will consider such request which came from an assemblyman,” he said.

When pressed further, Johari said Najib has agreed in principle that the MRP match be continued.

State assemblymen are now receiving an MRP fund of RM275,000 each from the state and; should this figure be matched by the federal government, he or she would be receiving an MRP fund totalling RM550,000 yearly.

On another topic, Johari who is deputy president of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Satok assemblyman said Najib has reminded BN elected representatives to go to the ground and be in touch with people’s need on a frequent basis.

“Such efforts are vital to let people know that the government cares and that they are not being sidelined. All YB’s should go to the ground more often but this also depends on the respective work load,” he said.

SABAH, SARAWAK GOVERNMENTS SEE TOO MANY LOOPHOLES IN SPORTS LAW

imageKUCHING, Tues:The governments of Sarawak and Sabah feel the Sports Development Act 1997 and Youth Development Act 2007 contain “too many loopholes” that exclude the two states from their roles in youth and sports development.

image After the signing of joint resolutions calling on the federal Youth and Sports Ministry to amend the acts, Sarawak Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk Seri William Mawan Ikom said: "We were consulted before the drafting of the Acts. But when they were tabled in Parliament, the proposals from the states were not incorporated.

"We want the two Acts to be amended before we agree to allow their extension to the two states."

Sabah Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Peter Pang En Yin said the resolutions lay out the common stance of the two states, and they will be submitted to the federal ministry.

"Certain parts of the two Acts have to be amended as the structure of the government administrations of the two states are different from the states in Peninsular Malaysia," he added.

Pang, the Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, said the proposals focus on the functions and responsibilities of the ministers from Sarawak and Sabah taking charge of youth and sports.

Sarawak Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation Ik Pahon Joyik explained that the two states want some control over sports development by having their own sports advisory panel.

He said the Sports Development Act gives the power to the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to form such a panel.

He explained that the resolution concerning youth asks for a form of power sharing with the federal ministry in youth development.

image "This is because 'youth' is presently the responsibility of the state, as it does not appear in the Federal List or Joint List. However, with the adoption of the Youth Development Act by Parliament all forms of youth activities and development come under the Act," he said.

He said the two states want this provision of the Act to be amended, and they want a permanent committee on youth to be formed with the federal Youth and Sports Ministry.
