Kota Kinabalu 18/12/2012: Universiti Institut Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah Rector, Datuk Dr Abdul Kadir Rosline, illustrated UiTM Sabah's need for financial assistance, Monday, stating that it now uses the MDAB's (Mengubah Destinasi Anak Bangsa) intake quota of other states.

He said this at a press conference after handing over financial assistance to MDAB students.

"This is the scenario here and it reflects Sabahans' desire to get education.

Among those keen include those from Pensiangan, Banggi Island and Kota Marudu."

KOTA KINABALU 8/11/2012: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) won a total of seven medals, three gold, three silver, and one bronze, at the just concluded International Trade Fair Ideas-Inventions-New Products (iENA) 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany.

According to UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, this was the second time the university took part in IENA.

“This is a remarkable achievement because we competed with many researchers from leading international universities,”

[DIKEMAS KINI] SHAH ALAM 25/09/2012- Peratusan jangkaan Barisan Nasional (BN) akan menang Pilihan Raya Umum ke-13 (PRU13) merosot berbanding awal tahun, demikian menurut hasil kajian terbaru diumumkan hari ini.

Sebaliknya, jangkaan bahawa Pakatan Rakyat (PR) akan mencapai misinya menguasai Putrajaya dan menggantikan BN di pusat pula meningkat.

Peratusan pengundi yang tidak pasti berhubung soalan yang membawa kepada jangkaan itu - "dengan andaian anda tidak memihak kepada mana-mana parti politik, parti manakah yang anda jangka akan menang di peringkat nasional dalam PRU13 dan menguasai Putrajaya", mengalami penurunan daripada 30 peratus kepada 26 peratus.

KUALA LUMPUR 22 September 2012: THE campus election results at five public universities revealed a new  trend: more women candidates are being elected.

In Kangar, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) campus election showed more than 56 per cent out of 31 contested seats were won by women candidates.

UniMAP vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin said out 17 women candidates who had won, three represented the general seats and 14 the various faculty seats.

"We are seeing more women as candidates this time around."

KUALA LUMPUR September 23, 2012: About 40,000 graduates in the country are still unemployed, based on the 2011 Graduate Tracking Study of the Higher Education Ministry.

Ministry deputy secretary-general (management) Datuk Omar Abd Rahman said: “We carry out the study yearly and last year, the percentage of graduates still unemployed was 21% from public institutions of higher learning, 27% from private institutions, 28% from polytechnics and 35% from community colleges.”

MANILA 21 September 2012: An inflammatory anti-Islamic film was screened at one of the Philippines’ top universities on Friday, defying a ban imposed by school officials who did not want it shown for security reasons.

Harry Roque, a prominent human rights lawyer and lecturer at the state-run  University of the Philippines in Manila, said he screened the “Innocence of  Muslims” as a demonstration of freedom of expression.

KUDAT September 10, 2012: Awareness among students in rural Sabah on their desire to attain higher education seems higher than initially expected.

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) learnt this yesterday after concluding its ‘Jom Masuk U’ programme at the Malaysia Day Cultural and Education Festival in Kudat.

MOHE director-general Datuk Professor Dr Rujhan Mustafa said some 5,000 students flocked to the Kudat Sports Complex on Saturday to benefit from the programme.

Fake degrees land him plum jobs

KUALA LUMPUR 07 September 2012: A conman duped a top university up north and a government department in Putrajaya by landing plum jobs there armed only with fake degrees.

The 45-year-old local lectured for more than two years at the university before securing a contract as a consultant at a government department.

Commercial Crime Investigation Department sources said the man earned almost RM7,000 as a lecturer and RM15,000 as a consultant for more than three years.

KOTA KINABALU September 6, 2012: It will be a brighter future for Sabah in many aspects if more higher learning institutions are set up in the state.

An academician with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sylvia A. Maratim, said higher education is a passport to a better life, and added that the quota system introduced in public universities under the New Economic Policy (NEP) in the 70s, and the rapidly increasing fees in private institutions, had affected the development of education in Malaysia.

“Many Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) leavers are very keen to enter public matriculation and universities but the quota is limited. Meanwhile, the fees to enter private institutions are always expensive.”

The first one-year diploma course to be offered in the field of real estate in Sabah, will require the participants to complete 12 papers in order for them to become registered estate agents.

He said, “the problem has lingered on for some time and has been well-publicised by the media too and it is obviously very serious as it involves the safety of the staff and students.

“What is urgently required is for serious action to be taken by the relevant authority to rectify or resolve the problem. Unfortunately I have not seen any sign of urgency on their part in tackling this problem.

“The problem has affected the intake of polytechnic students in Sabah. This should not have happened,” he added.

KOTA KINABALU 24th May, 2012: Kolej Yayasan Sabah (KYS) will be upgraded to university college in less than two years and is now in the midst of enhancing the level of education of both staff and students.

Chairman of the college’s board of directors, Datuk Kamal D. E. Quadra said the effort was a result of a collaboration between Kolej Yayasan Sabah and Universiti Kuala Lumpur.

KOTA KINABALU 21st May, 2012: The Sabah Kadazandusun Murut Welfare and Education Association (Pekadin), which has been very vocal about the establishment of a Kadazandusun Murut College in Sabah, has hailed the government’s move to accord college status to vocational schools nationwide to by 2013.

Its vice-president Simon Molubi said the initiative was timely and should be supported by all for a fluid transformation of the national education system.
