Moratorium on expanding oil palm plantations proposed

KOTA KINABALU 9/11/2012: A suggestion to impose a moratorium on further expansion of oil palm plantations within the Heart of Borneo (HoB) was recently heard during the HoB International Conference.

“It is the idea of one of the (discussion) groups and it is a joint suggestion to the government that had a lot of support,” said Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA) executive director Datuk Dr Junaidi Payne who was also a facilitator.

He added that the suggestion was made after hearing the Agriculture Department stating that 90 percent of Sabah’s agriculture land was occupied by oil palm, and only 10 percent were rice and other crops.

“There is a body of thinking that Sabah has enough oil palm now.

Jac menjalankan tanggungjawab sebagai seorang penganut Kristian dengan menyanyikan lagu 'Harapan Bangsa'.

PETALING JAYA 20/10/2012: Penyanyi Jaclyn Victor menganggap lagu Harapan Bangsa yang dinyanyikannya adalah salah satu bentuk sumbangan dan tanggungjawab untuk agamanya iaitu Kristian.

Jaclyn atau nama sebenarnya Jaclyn Joshua Thanaraj Victor, 33, berkata, dia menyanyikan lagu itu dalam Bahasa Malaysia bukan bertujuan untuk menyebarkan agama berkenaan tetapi dikhususkan kepada penganut Kristian di Sabah dan Sarawak.

"Saya hanya menjalankan tanggungjawab sebagai seorang penganut Kristian dengan menyanyikan lagu berkenaan kepada orang Kristian di Sabah dan Sarawak. Kebanyakan mereka di dua negeri itu lebih faham Bahasa Malaysia.

"Dan sebagai sebuah negara yang mengamalkan kebebasan beragama, isu tersebut tidak seharusnya dipertikaikan,"

PEACE DEAL TO STEM ILLEGALS FLOW

Peace deal to stem illegals flow

Kota Kinabalu 9/10/2012: The State Government has welcomed the announcement of a framework agreement for peace between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman said the much awaited initiative would pave the way for peace, according the Bangsamoro their civil rights, a new way of life and prospect for a better future.

"This is indeed a historic moment and a dawn of a new era for the Bangsamoro. It is a reflection of the commitment towards ending decades of violence and give the Bangsamoro people a chance to live and work on their own land in peace,"he said.

85,200 SABAHANS JOBLESS LAST YEAR

85,200 Sabahans jobless last year – Pang

KOTA KINABALU September 26, 2012: Sabah recorded an unemployment rate of 5.2 per cent, with around 85,200 unemployed citizens in Sabah last year.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang En Yin said the percentage of unemployment was relatively low and had not increased despite an increase in population.

    It invites suspicion that Tanda Putera is just one step short of a propaganda exercise to subtly cast Lim Kit Siang as a hateful, anti-Malay figure.

    August 7, 2012: The Tanda Putera filmmakers are marketing their movie as an educational product on the claim that the events they have depicted are based on established truth.

    “My team and I did a lot of research, such as studying documented materials and photographs, to make sure the scenes were backed by historical facts,” its producer-director Shuhaimi Baba told the New Straits Times on Aug 4.

    One scene in Tanda Putera is reportedly of Lim Kit Siang urinating at the flagpole (in the compound of) the Selangor Menteri Besar’s residence while at the same time shouting a racial slur.

    Lim Kit Siang has said that this was a downright lie and dangerous falsehood in an Aug 4 statement.

    SEPANGGAR May 3, 2012: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is intensifying its operation around the east coast of Sabah as the area has been identified as the main entrance for illegal immigrants into the country.

    Sabah Navy Regional Two commander Rear Admiral Mohd Rosland Omar said among the hot spot areas identified were Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna.

    “We will continue to intensify our operations to ensure the security level of Sabah waters is achieved,” he said, adding that there are about 2,800 navy officers and personnel in Sabah with 2,000 based at the Sepanggar Naval Base.

    Sarawak has vast tracts of land which are ironically being turned into oil palm plantations even as the state becomes heavily dependent on food imports.

    KUCHING Dec 26, 2011:  Malaysia’s cost of living has risen steeply. Most basic food like rice, flour, cooking oil, sugar prices has shot up.

    In Sarawak, we have land but are totally dependent on the importation of rice (Sarawak imports 70% of its rice consumption). Even fruits are imported from Australia and New Zealand.

    imageSeptember 25, 2011 : THOSE of a certain generation may be familiar with Gurchan Singh, the “Lion of Malaya”.

    One of the most famous Malayan freedom fighters during the Japanese Occupation, Gurchan wrote and secretly distributed a newspaper to rally people during the dangerous times.

    According to local historian Dr Ranjit Singh Malhi, Gurchan's wartime exploits were contained in a textbook, Heroes of Malaya, which was widely used in Malayan schools in the 1950s.

    “Our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, was among those who grieved at Gurchan's death in 1965 and personally offered condolences to his family,” he says.

    BHF: Re-examine and re-think strategies on oil and gas resources

    KOTA KINABALU 9th August, 2011: The recent announcement by PETRONAS of two new gas finds off Sabah is a god-sent opportunity for the present government and its leaders to revisit the much-discussed loss of Sabah’s oil and gas resources and increment of petroleum royalties, said Borneo Heritage Foundation (BHF).

    Its Chairman, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said given this new development, the State Government needs to re-examine and re-think its strategies on the oil and gas resources located in Sabah and its territorial waters.
