Locals shun ’3D’ jobs

SANDAKAN 16/12/2012: Indonesian workers are apparently returning home now because of the upswing in the oil palm industry in their home country, and this has raised concerns on the ability of the sector in Malaysia in filling the void with local workers.

According to Malaysian Palm Oil Association executive secretary Genga G Pillai, rumours that Indonesian palm oil workers are returning home are true but how it will affect the local palm oil industry is still yet to be known.

“Locals do not normally want to work at something they consider as 3D (dirty, dangerous, demeaning) jobs.

“You can even see this in the construction sector. They would prefer office jobs and such. But as to how the return of these foreign workers to their homeland will affect the industry, we’ll have to wait and see,”

“It is not just due to the lack of infrastructure, but due to the mindset of our people, our youngsters. People might get mad with me for making this statement but this is the reality. We need to encourage our people, coax them to work hard and change their mindset.

“We complain about Sabah not having enough work opportunity, yet there are 300,000 foreigners working in Sabah. It is simply not logical for us to say that there is a lack of jobs out there when 300,000 foreigners are working in Sabah. Yet our people remain unemployed,”

KUALA LUMPUR 21/10/2012: All young Malaysian lawyers do not meet the standard international quality benchmark set by their employers, according to a Bar Council survey.

Bar Council treasurer Steven Thiru said the survey, conducted on 400 law firms, also found that employer satisfaction of new working lawyers was “shockingly low”.

“It found that young lawyers practising for less than seven years do not have basic attributes like English proficiency, communication and critical thinking skills and commitment to the profession, which is vital for the career,” said Thiru at a forum between the Bar Council and the National Young Lawyers Committee (NYLC),

KUALA LUMPUR 29/09/2012: The use of antibiotics in Malaysia has to be streamlined due to an alarming rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria, said the Health Ministry's Department of Medicine, National Head and Consultant for infectious disease Datuk Dr Christopher Lee on Saturday.

He said the increase of bacteria such as Carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae and Multi Resistant Acinetobacter or, "Superbug" posed a significant threat to human health globally and has led to the emergence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

"For the good of Sabah's image and reputation, we need to put in place some form of fitness of character assessment.

Some, like Dr Harry Chong, a lecturer, was not against the idea but said the purpose of allowing students to bring hand phones to school should be to communicate with their parents.

He said a schedule must be fixed as to when the students are allowed to use the hand phone device and when they should switch it off.

Undergrads get green light

SERI KEMBANGAN: University students are free to take part in political activities now that Section 15(5)(a) of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) has become obsolete under the Court of Appeal's ruling on Monday.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said Section 15(5)(a) was effectively unconstitutional and violated the guarantee of freedom of speech as there was no order for a stay of execution on the ruling.

“Unless the Cabinet decides to appeal and the Federal Court overturns the ruling on Monday, the section is no longer valid,” Saifuddin told reporters after meeting three of the four Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) graduates who were plaintiffs in the case.

Saifuddin urged the Cabinet not to appeal the Court of Appeal's ruling.
