MANILA 18/03/2013: Presiden Filipina, Benigno Aquino pada Ahad berkata proses rundingan adalah satu-satunya jalan untuk menyelesaikan tuntutan Kesultanan Sulu terhadap Sabah dan beliau turut mengkritik tindakan kumpulan bersenjata menyerang Malaysia.

Aquino turut mengecam konspirasi terancang pihak tidak bertanggjungjawab yang menghantar pengikut-pengikut kesultanan Sulu ke Sabah kerana ia telah mengancam keselamatan 800,000 rakyat Filipina yang tinggal dan bekerja di negeri itu.

Bercakap di Akademi Elit Ketenteraan di Filipina pada Ahad, beliau turut mengutuk tindakan pengikut Sultan Sulu, Sultan Jamalul Kiram III yang membunuh dengan kejam sembilan anggota pasukan keselamatan di Malaysia.

KOTA KINABALU 15/03/2013: Many hotels in Sabah are already feeling the negative impact following the foreign armed intrusion in Lahad Datu.

According to Christopher Chan, president of the Sabah Hotel Association (SHA), some hotels have experienced a drop of 30 per cent in their room occupancy beginning early this month.

Many also experienced a drop of between 30 per cent and 40 per cent in their income as government departments were cancelling events that were supposed to take place at the respective hotels, Chan told a press conference at a hotel here yesterday,.

The drop in income due to the drop of foreign arrivals was between 15 per cent and 20 per cent, he said.

Website hotel and tour booking portals have also indicated a drop of more than 20 per cent in online bookings for hotels and tours offered in Sabah, he said.

“It is a worrying figure…The situation is not good despite the claim made by the relevant authorities that tourism is business as usual in Sabah,”

KUALA LUMPUR 25/12/2012: “Setiap kelahiran bayi di negara ini tanpa mengira status termasuk anak pendatang haram sekali pun wajib didaftarkan di Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN),” kata Pegawai Perhubungan Awam JPN, Jainisah Mohd Noor.

Beliau berkata, sekiranya terlewat mendaftarkan kelahiran, ibu bapa masih boleh mendaftarkan anak mereka tanpa dikenakan sebarang denda.

Menurutnya, jika tiada sijil lahir, ibu bapa hanya perlu membuat proses daftar lewat kelahiran di mana-mana pejabat JPN yang terdekat.

KOTA KINABALU 20/12/2012: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has come under fire from Sabah leaders over the shutdown of work by Global Upline Sdn Bhd (GUSB), the contractor of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) development.

Barisan Nasional (BN) Putatan member of parliament Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh was of the opinion that GUSB’s statement about the reason why it had stopped work on the airport expansion project proved that the Transport Ministry is irresponsible.

He was also worried about the safety aspects of the airport based on GUSB’s statement which read, ‘in the interest of safety to aircraft operation and passengers alike, we would like to inform the public that the runway is not safe for landing, take-off and other operation since it has been certified non-complete by MOT. The runway shall be forthwith closed for operation’.

Kota Kinabalu 18/12/2012: Sabah Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Youth on Monday appealed to the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities to step in and help smallholders and kampong folks affected by the low Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) prices.

Sabah MIC Youth Chief, Taren Sunil Manoharan when urging Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said the smallholders and villagers who have invested in oil palm not only face low FFB prices but are also unable to sell their produce.

"Although the prevailing market price of FFB is about RM390 per tonne, the fact on the ground is that none of the smallholders and villagers is getting anywhere near that figure.

"Instead they are getting between RM300 and RM320 per tonne. And that is if there are buyers at all,"

SANDAKAN 16/12/2012: Indonesian workers are apparently returning home now because of the upswing in the oil palm industry in their home country, and this has raised concerns on the ability of the sector in Malaysia in filling the void with local workers.

According to Malaysian Palm Oil Association executive secretary Genga G Pillai, rumours that Indonesian palm oil workers are returning home are true but how it will affect the local palm oil industry is still yet to be known.

“Locals do not normally want to work at something they consider as 3D (dirty, dangerous, demeaning) jobs.

“You can even see this in the construction sector. They would prefer office jobs and such. But as to how the return of these foreign workers to their homeland will affect the industry, we’ll have to wait and see,”

Govt mulls deferring 30% affordable housing policy

KOTA KINABALU 16/12/2012: The Local Government and Housing Ministry will consider deferring the implementation of the newly announced policy of requiring 30 per cent affordable housing in every new development project next year, if there are still many unsold units of affordable houses.

Its minister, Datuk Hajiji Noor, said this in response to the statement by Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda), asking that the government reconsider the policy.

“We will see how many unsold affordable houses we have in Sabah. Our officers are now working on it and we will have the result soon.

“From the initial report, Shareda has said more than 5,000 affordable houses are still in the market, however, the ministry will check on the figures and will consider accordingly if it is found to be true,”

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Nov — Penguatkuasa anti-rasuah Hong Kong menulis secara peribadi kepada Datuk Musa Aman pada Disember lepas untuk memaklumkan Ketua Menteri Sabah itu bahawa beliau tidak lagi disiasat untuk tuduhan rasuah RM40 juta — sumbangan kepada Umno negeri tersebut, menurut surat yang ditunjukkan kepada The Malaysian Insider.

Dalam surat pada 22 Disember 2012, Suruhanjaya Bebas Pencegahan Rasuah (ICAC) menjelaskan kepada ketua menteri itu mereka memulakan siasatan selepas menerima aduan terhadapnya, sambil menambah bahawa ini dikehendaki oleh undang-undang Hong Kong berkenaan dengan rasuah.

Tetapi agensi itu berkata bahawa selepas melengkapkan siasatan dan memfailkan laporan kepada Jawatankuasa Semakan Operasi (ORC), kedua-dua jawatankuasa dan Pesuruhjaya ICAC bersetuju untuk tidak meneruskan lagi penyiasatan “di atas asas fakta sudah diketahui”.
