Why 'Sultan' is dreaming

Kota Kinabalu 27/03/2013: Sabah was free from any claim when it achieved independence through the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, according to former State Archives Director, Datuk Datu Tigabelas Datu Zainal Abidin.

He said independence was achieved through five charters which made Sabah free from any claim either from the Sultan of Sulu, Sultan of Brunei or the British which once called North Borneo their own, i.e. British North Borneo.

He said this during his talk titled "Sulu's Claim on Sabah: True Facts" in conjunction with the Ops Daulat Security Briefing organised by the Information Department at Wisma Dang Bandang, Tuesday.

• The first charter, he said, was when the Sultan of Brunei made an agreement with Alfred Dent and Baron de Overbeck on Dec. 29, 1877 followed by
• the second charter when Sultan of Sulu made an agreement with Alfred Dent and Baron de Overbeck on Jan. 22, 1878.
• "The third charter was when the British gave the North Borneo Chartered Company the power to administer Sabah on Nov 1, 1881, followed by
• the fourth charter on July 9, 1963, when we signed an agreement to join with Sarawak, Singapore and the Malay Federation to be free from colonisation.
• "The fifth charter is when the United Nations announced that the majority of Sabah and Sarawak wanted to be part of the Federation of Malaysia," he said.

KOTA KINABALU 26/03/2013- Persatuan Kebajikan dan Pendidikan Kadazandusun Murut Sabah (Pekadin) mahu Kementerian Pelajaran segera mengkaji semula kandungan buku teks sejarah Malaysia yang diajar di sekolah, terutama rentetan sejarah pentadbiran pra-kemerdekaan atau sebelum Sabah dan  Sarawak sama-sama membentuk persekutuan Malaysia.

Timbalan presidennya Nailin Gabintal berkata, terdapat keperluan yang mendesak untuk berbuat demikian ekoran kes pencerobohan pengganas, yang kononnya menuntut hak ke atas Sabah, di Lahad Datu baru-baru ini.

Katanya, buku teks sejarah Malaysia sedia ada lebih fokus kepada sejarah di Semenanjung Malaysia dan hanya sedikit sahaja sejarah mengenai Sabah dan Sarawak.

"Berdasarkan maklum balas dan tinjauan Pekadin, ramai generasi muda dan ada golongan dewasa yang masih 'samar-samar' fakta sejarah sebenar yang ada kaitan dengan kesultanan sulu sebelum Sabah mencapai kemerdekaan menerusi pembentukan negara Malaysia pada 16 September 1963.

Naib Canselor UMS Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah berkata cadangan penubuhan pusat tersebut tercetus atas keprihatinan UMS terhadap isu-isu semasa seperti insiden pencerobohan pengganas di Lahad Datu dan Semporna.

Katanya pusat yang dinamakan Pusat Kajian Strategik Sabah akan menumpukan skop kajian yang merangkumi sejarah dan kedaulatan negeri Sabah selain aspek perundangan, keselamatan dan hubungan antarabangsa.

KOTA KINABALU 2011/07/12: It is one of the most popular traditional musical instruments in Sabah, but not many know how to play it.

The sompoton is also popular among tourists, who buy it as a souvenir, although its melodious sound is alien to them.

To promote and encourage locals to pick up the sompoton, the Kadazan Dusun Language and Cultural Centre (KDLC) recently organised the first ever workshop on the native instrument.

Themed "Our Music, Our Pride", 11 people, including one from Penang, spent three days learning the finer points of playing the instrument under the guidance of Juie Maikon, an experienced sompoton player from Tambunan.

The sompoton is made from a dried gourd and eight bamboo pipes arranged in a double-layered raft.

The sompoton produces a soft sweet harmonious sound by blowing or drawing on air through the gourd's mouthpiece.

KDLC adviser Dr Roslayn Gelunu said more such workshops would be organised in the future, featuring other traditional musical instruments.

"Our aim is to highlight the uniqueness of the various traditional musical instruments in Sabah to encourage locals as well as foreigners to learn how to play them."

Cicak Tokek mendapat permintaan yang tinggi di pasaran

PETALING JAYA Julai 12, 2011 : Jawatankuasa Muzakarah Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan yang bersidang buat kali ke-95 pada 16 hingga 18 Jun lalu memutuskan hukum memakan dan berubat dengan menggunakan cicak tokek adalah haram.

Dalam satu kenyataan yang dipaparkan di laman web e-fatwa, Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim), Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan berpandangan bahawa para ahli fekah telah mengklasifikasikan cicak tokek sebagai binatang yang haram dimakan kerana ia tergolong dalam kategori yang menjijikkan serta mempunyai racun.

“Justeru, masyarakat Malaysia diseru tidak menjadikan binatang ini sebagai makanan yang biasa dimakan.

“Sehingga kini, tidak ada bukti saintifik dan ujian klinikal yang membuktikan penggunaan cicak tokek mampu menjadi penawar kepada penyakit-penyakit tertentu,” menurut kenyataan yang dikeluarkan itu.

Sebelum ini laporan akhbar pernah menyebut permintaan cicak tokek amat tinggi dan didakwa dijual pada harga ratusan ribu bagi seekor cicak jika ia dijual.

Ada juga dakwaan yang menyebut cicak ini mampu mengubati penyakit HIV bagaimanapun sehingga kini tiada kajian yang dapat mengesahkan kesahihannya.

“Justeru, Jawatankuasa Muzarakah Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan memutuskan hukum memakan cicak tokek adalah haram di sisi Islam.

“Manakala untuk tujuan perubatan penggunaan cicak tokek adalah diharuskan dengan syarat keberkesanannya dapat dibuktikan sekiranya tiada alternatif ubat lain yang boleh digunakan bagi merawat penyakit berkenaan,” katanya.

Mei lalu, media melaporkan seorang ahli perniagaann Nazaruddin Saidin diculik berpunca daripada keinginannya bertemu dengan penjual cicak tokek, yang hanya dikenali sebagai Ghafar , di selatan Filipina.

Nazarudin, 38, bapa kepada enam orang cahaya mata ini dilaporkan diculik sekumpulan 10 lelaki bersenjata ketika berada di selatan Filipina ketika dia sedang menguruskan pembelian cicak tokek di negara tersebut. Sehingga kini pihak berkuasa masih belum dapat menemuinya.

LONDON 2011/07/04: Seekor kucing di Britain masih hidup walaupun ditembak sebanyak 30 kali, lapor akhbar Daily Mail.

Apabila pemilik kucing yang dinamakan Hope itu berdarah, beliau menyangkakan haiwan kesayangannya itu diserang anjing.

Bagaimanapun selepas dibawa ke klinik haiwan, doktor memberitahu yang badan kucing itu penuh kecederaan akibat tembakan. Kebanyakan kecederaan di belakang dengan empat peluru di kepalanya.

Pakar perubatan mengeluarkan sebahagian 10 serpihan tetapi berputus asa mengeluarkan yang lain kerana bimbang akan mendatangkan komplikasi.

Persatuan Diraja Mencegah Kekejaman Haiwan (RSPCA) membuka siasatan ke atas kes itu.

Inspektor (RSPCA), Amy Collingsworth berkata, “Hope sangat mesra dan kucing yang menawan dan agak sukar memahami mengapa seseorang mahu menembak haiwan tidak bersalah,”.

“RSPCA menyiasat kejadian ini dan meminta sesiapa yang mempunyai maklumat mengenai tembakan ini menghubungi kami,” katanya.

RSPCA melaporkan 567 kes penderaan haiwan membabitkan senjata tahun lalu saja. Hope sudah pulih dan dijangka dikembalikan kepada tuannya tidak lama lagi.

KUALA KLAWANG, 2 Julai (Bernama) -- Menteri Penerangan Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim berkata pelanggan Astro sendiri perlu mengadili hasrat syarikat televisyen berbayar itu yang mahu menaikan tarif perkhidmatan berkenaan.

"Saya menyeru supaya rakyat (pelanggan Astro) yang tidak merestui kenaikan pakej itu melahirkan perasaannya menerusi lunas undang-undang dan menyampaikan kepada kita.

"Tetapi sudah jelas kepada kita bahawa Astro berpendirian sendiri dan hanya mementingkan keuntungan mereka dan tidak memberi pandangan yang boleh membantu masyarakat di luar bandar ataupun di bandar," katanya kepada pemberita selepas majlis kunjungan mesra rakyat 1Malaysia di Kampung Chennah dekat sini.

Rais berkata beliau menyerahkan kepada Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) untuk meneliti perkara ini.

Beliau sebelum itu menghadiri majlis pelancaran kampung tanpa wayar Kampung Puom dekat sini. Turut hadir ialah Ketua Setiausaha Kementeri Penerangan Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf.

Pada Jumaat, Kabinet memutuskan Astro tidak boleh menaikkan tarif perkhidmatan mereka selagi tidak mendapat kebenaran daripada SKMM. Kabinet berpendapat Astro tidak wajar menaikkan sebarang tarif berkaitan perkhidmatan mereka.

Rais, yang juga anggota Parlimen Jelebu, berkata Astro seharusnya memikirkan tentang rakyat dan tidak sekaligus menaikkan harga sedemikian.

MALAYSIANS SPENT OVER US$500MIL (RM1.5BIL) ON ALCOHOL

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite being a small country, Malaysia has been named the 10th largest consumer of alcohol in the world.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics this year, Malaysians spent over US$500mil (RM1.5bil) on alcohol, while the per capita consumption was seven litres. Beer consumption in Malaysia is 11 litres per capita.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Heng Seai Kie said the alcohol consumption problem in the country was getting serious.

"Alcohol not only causing a lot of health issues, it is also contributing to a significant number of accidents," she said Sunday, speaking to reporters after launching booklets and a seminar, 'Promote Healthy lifestyle: Reduce Alcohol Harm', organised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, and supported by IOGT International, a worldwide community of non-governmental organisations), and the National Association of the Prevention of Drug Abuse (Pemadam).

The road safety council estimated that drinking and driving caused 30% of road accidents nationwide and 38% of those who died in road accidents consumed alcohol before they went on the roads.

Study also showed that absenteeism from the workplace among alcoholics was 16 times higher than others.

Heng said the ministry, through the National Population and Family Development Board, would hold a campaign to create awareness on the dangers of alcohol abuse.

She said 10 seminars would be held nationwide this year, which would be conducted in Mandarin, Malay, English and Tamil at urban and rural areas, including estates.

The seminars will target mostly those from the Chinese and Indian communities found to have higher abuse of alcohol.

"The public must understand that alcohol is not our culture and will bring harm if abused," she said.

Students who see nothing wrong in offering bribes

March 02, 2011 Kota Kinabalu: A third of students in the country do not think it is wrong to offer a bribe.

Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) Dato Sutinah Sutan said this came to light in the latest studies conducted by the MACC and UTM.

"For me this is alarming, Bribes are an indicator of the lack of integrity.

Perhaps corruption and bribes has become so much a way of our lives that we don't feel it is a crime," she said at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Integrity Day programme on Tuesday.

She said bribes can come in many forms and gave examples such as receiving or giving bribes as a reward or influence for some help in connection with official business, passing up a document containing fraudulent claim to a department with intention to receive profit, making decisions and misuse of power such as taking action where relatives or friends of the officer have interests.

Sutinah, in this instance, spoke of the need to be ethical and to stay away from corruption.

She said the integrity issue in the public sector can take many forms such as slow service, wasting expenditure, putting one's self interests first, being involved in outside business, loafing, wasting time, being late, being saddled with debts, inferior quality of work, a lavish lifestyle exceeding one's earnings, receiving gifts without consideration and wrongful use of power and authority.

Sutinah said Malaysia has ranked "not so good, not so bad" in Transparency International's Corruption Transparency Index (CTI) over the years but since 2008 the ranking has dropped more towards bad.

"The World Bank estimates that corruption worldwide has led to losses worth more than USD10 billion."

Sutinah said the best way to prevent corruption is a holistic approach and managing it at the source.

"As such the strategy used by MACC to prevent graft is based on education, enforcement and prevention," she said.

Meanwhile UMS Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Amran Ahmed in his speech on behalf of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Kamaruzaman Ampon said that the university emphasises the importance of integrity in each staff and student in the university.

"Integrity covers things such as individuals who keep their word and promises, are ethical and hold true to truth and justice, not compromising with unprofessional conduct and not jeopardising the name and honour of the university through their actions.

"For undergraduates, the university also places an importance on the role of integrity in their holistic development.

"Other than enforcing the existing laws such as the Universities and Colleges Act, university constitution and the boarding regulations, various activities that promote the element of integrity among undergraduates are encouraged.

"Individuals who have integrity are able to control their negative emotions and are also able to be highly productive and dedicated to their work.

"We are committed to integrity in UMS and as such, I urge that March 1 each year be the official day to celebrate Integrity Day in UMS." he said.

Also present at the seminar were UMS Registrar Mej. (K) Abdullah Mohd Said and Sabah MACC Director, Jalil Jaafar.

2011/02/04 ROME: United Nations food agencies on Friday warned that record-high prices for basic commodities are helping generate unrest around the world and contributed to the ousting of the Tunisian president last month.

“Not only is there a risk, but there have already been riots in some parts of the world because of rising prices,” Jacques Diouf, head of the UN’s Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), told reporters.

“Some governments have found themselves in difficult situations and there is even one that has fallen,” he said — a reference to the toppling of Tunisia’s veteran ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in a popular revolt on January 14.

The FAO on Thursday said food prices have reached their highest level since the UN agency began measuring them in 1990.

The FAO’s index of monthly variations for a variety of staples rose 3.4 percent from December 2010 to reach 231 points.

The World Food Programme, another UN agency, said: “The events unfolding across the Middle East these past few weeks serve as a warning to us all about the important role that food security plays in calming public anger.”

“Across the region, we have seen civil protests driven by a complex array of different factors but all sharing one thing in common — growing anxiety about rising food prices and concern about access to food,” it said in a statement.

Prices add “stress to the carefully calibrated systems in place to bring enough food into countries to feed hungry populations, and to provide the subsidies that ensure it is sold at prices that are accessible to the poor.” France, which has promised to stamp out food price volatility as the current head of the G20 group of leading world economies, warned of “hunger riots”.

“There is a real risk of hunger riots,” French Agriculture Minister Bruno Le Maire said at a joint press conference with Diouf.

Le Maire called for “structural measures” to avoid spikes in food prices, including greater transparency over production and stocks.

He said that G20 countries should agree on a system of food stocks that can be released for parts of the world that are most at risk.

“Speculation on hunger in the world is economically dangerous and morally unacceptable,” he said, referring to widespread criticism from campaigners of the role played by financial speculators on global commodity markets.

A previous sharp rise in food prices in 2007 and 2008 triggered food riots in a number of African countries, as well as in Haiti and the Philippines.

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 Jan (Bernama) -- Masalah kekurangan bekalan minyak masak yang dilaporkan di beberapa kawasan bulan lepas kini pulih sepenuhya, kata Timbalan Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan Datuk Tan Lian Hoe.

Beliau turut menegaskan bahawa kerajaan tiada rancangan untuk menaikkan harga barangan subsidi itu yang dibekalkan kepada peruncit pada harga RM2.40 sekilogram berbanding harga sebenar RM3.50 sekilogram.

"Jadi kita sangat berharap agar rakyat tidak lagi panik sebab kita takut berapa banyak kita lambak dalam pasaran pun tapi kalau ada 'panic buying' (pembelian secara panik) lagi kita tidak akan dapat menyelesaikan masalah ini," katanya.

"Ini termasuk peruncit menjual secara borong, berniaga tanpa lesen, menafikan memiliki barangan kawalan, memindahkan barangan kawalan ke tempat lain dari dalam stesen, memiliki barangan kawalan secara tidak sah dan pemborong menyimpan melebihi kapasiti dibenarkan," katanya.

Cancer Council top volunteers receive awards

December 24, 2010, KOTA KINABALU: After presenting special awards to its top volunteers in West Malaysia recently, it was now time for MAKNA (National Cancer Council) to pay tribute to their counterparts in East Malaysia for their excellent work performed all-year long in the activities held by the non-profit organisation.

For this occasion which took place in Kota Kinabalu, out of MAKNA’s registered 6,000 plus volunteers nationwide, nine of its volunteers from Sabah and Sarawak were singled out for the top awards for their contributions and effort by MAKNA.

The recipients were selected based on several criteria which included leadership qualities, accountability factor, commitment, responsibility and the number of projects participated.

The areas of service the volunteers have been harnessing their volunteerism skills in were nursing care, home and hospital visits, fund raising, events management, administrative work, support services and counselling.

For the top awards, there were two award categories that were presented at the ceremony. The following are the details:

1. Special and Leadership Award (Brown Vest)

Zariana Binti Hj Daud (34 years old), mother is a cancer survivor

2. Potential Leader Award (Blue Vest)

Asirun Bin Nurun (19 years old), Mohammad Taufik Bin Ibrahim (23), Nur Kasih Binti Abdullah (29), Najip Indal Bin Muhid (19) Rozieana Jorun (24), Peter Voo (33), Nurul Amin Binti Md Yasa (24) and Azlin Bin Nasir (26).

For their effort, each above mentioned recipient received a certificate, a brown or blue vest and special souvenirs.

Traditionally, blue vest recipients are those who have made great impressions and are thus considered on their way to achieve much more in the years to come.

Besides meeting all the criteria for the Special and Leadership Award, Zariana is a dedicated volunteer who is able to lead without much supervision. She has also been able to expand the groups of volunteers she looks after and as such, more cancer patients have been able to benefit from her help and support.

MAKNA’s registered volunteers come from all backgrounds and walks of life. Comprising working adults, students, teenagers, housewives, and they form the strongest advocates for MAKNA’s activities, aggressively promoting the prevention and early detection of cancer besides sharing experiences and providing moral support to cancer patients they assist.

According to MAKNA general manager Farahida Mohd Farid, “MAKNA’s volunteers are truly our ambassadors in the kind of volunteerism work we are doing in helping cancer patients all over the country. Not only they carry the torch for us, they embody the kind of values that are important in ensuring our patients receive exactly the type of help they need.”

“We are also appreciative that our volunteers are able to channel their knowledge, skills and experiences in reaching out to cancer patients and their families. Their versatility and never-say-die attitude has emboldened many others, providing the sort of motivation for the newer volunteers to keep striving so that patients will derive great benefits from their contributions,” added Farahida.

MAKNA Senior Volunteers Coordinator Fadzilah Wan said: “These volunteers are a special breed in that they would step out their own comfort zone to perform needful services to deserving patients who can sometimes develop depression and psychological issues due to cancer.”

Fadzilah continued, “Their dedication and commitment is second to none, and some have been performing this work for many years which to me, goes to show that humans can generally be a lot more compassionate when they need be, and to be able to just love and care for a total stranger, this is simply out of this world.”

KES "SUPERBUG" PERTAMA DIKESAN

Jangan Panik Dengan Laporan Mengenai Superbug, Kata Liow

SANDAKAN, 30 Okt (Bernama) -- Rakyat Malaysia tidak perlu panik dengan laporan mengenai kes "superbug" pertama yang dikesan pada seorang wanita berusia 24 tahun, kata Menteri Kesihatan Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Beliau berkata pesakit tersebut merupakan satu-satunya pembawa bakteria yang kebal kepada hampir semua antibiotik itu, dan dia telah sembuh selepas menerima rawatan daripada sebuah hospital.

"Kami telah mengeluarkan bakteria berkenaan dari tubuhnya dan ia tidak berjangkit kepada pekerja kesihatan atau pesakit lain," katanya kepada pemberita selepas melancarkan Program Karnival Kesihatan di Klinik Desa Karamunting di sini Sabtu.

Menurut Pusat Kawalan dan Pencegahan Penyakit Amerika Syarikat, superbug atau nama saintitiknya, NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-lactamase-1), ialah sejenis enzim yang mampu memusnahkan hampir semua antibiotik serta menjadikan mereka tidak berkesan.

Berikutan pengesanan kes pertama itu, Liow berkata semua hospital dan klinik telah diarah mematuhi secara ketat, garis panduan dalam pemberian antibiotik kerana bakteria berkenaan kebal terhadap ubat berkenaan dan boleh membiak.

Mula dikesan di India dan Pakistan, superbug dilaporkan telah mengakibatkan kematian seorang lelaki Belgium selain menjangkiti beberapa orang lagi dari Britain, Australia dan Amerika Syarikat yang berkunjung ke kedua-dua negara untuk melakukan pembedahan.

Mangsa dari Belgium dilaporkan dijangkiti bakteria itu selepas menerima rawatan sebuah hospital di Pakistan untuk kecederaan di kaki akibat kemalangan kereta.

Dalam perkembangan lain, Liow turut mengumumkan bahawa sebuah klinik bergerak akan dibuka di Sandakan, manakala Klinik Desa Karamunting akan dinaik taraf.

Selain itu, Kementerian Kesihatan akan mengkaji permohonan bagi menempatkan lebih ramai pakar di Hospital Duchess of Kent di sini.

RANAU: Yang Dipertua (YDP) Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pekan di sini, Ust. Mohd. Hainin @ Gantala (gambar) mengajak semua PIBG sama ada di peringkat sekolah rendah atau menengah di negeri ini, supaya berbuat sesuatu bagi memberi kerjasama kepada pihak berkuasa tempatan untuk menangani punca gejala buang bayi dan sebarang keganasan rumah tangga yang kini amat membimbangkan.

Menurutnya, meskipun kes itu tidak berlaku di tempat sendiri, tetap langkah berjaga-jaga dan pengawasan dengan memberi didikan serta bimbingan agama dan akhlak kepada generasi muda khususnya anak-anak adalah amat mustahak sebagai benteng daripada terlibat dengan sebarang kegiatan tidak bermoral.

Beliau berkata, kes pembuangan bayi yang kini semakin kritikal memerlukan kerjasama semua pihak termasuk para ibu bapa untuk memberi sumbangan mencari jalan terbaik bagi menyelesaikannya dan bukan menuding jari hanya menyerahkan tanggungjawab itu kepada kerajaan, sebaliknya memerlukan sokongan semua pihak dengan memantau aktiviti di kawasan masing-masing.

“Kita tidak boleh jangka bila dan di mana pihak yang tidak bertanggungjawab akan berbuat demikian (buang bayi), dengan itu kita perlu menggandakan pemantauan secara berterusan,” jelas Mohd. Hainin kepada New Sabah Times kelmarin.

Beliau turut meluahkan rasa bimbang isu tersebut akan membawa imej negatif kepada masyarakat, bangsa dan negara, apa lagi kepada Malaysia sebagai sebuah negara Islam.

Mohd. Hainin yang juga salah seorang kakitangan Jabatan Hal-Ehwal Agama Islam Negeri Sabah ( Jheains) Ranau, turut menyambut baik dan menyokong keputusan kerajaan agar kes pembuangan bayi disiasat sebagai kes membunuh yang disifatkannya sebagai kena pada masanya.

Beliau turut bersetuju dengan kenyataan Setiausaha Bahagian Kawalan Penapisan Filem dan Penguatkuasaan Kementerian Dalam Negeri, S. Tanasengran yang menyatakan kes pembuangan bayi serta keganasan yang kian berleluasa di negara ini berkemungkinan mempunyai kaitan dengan bahan yang ditonton masyarakat.

“Kenyataan S. Tanasengran itu mungkin ada benarnya, sebab masyarakat termasuk golongan belia (pelajar sekolah/institusi) hari ini, kini semakin terdedah malah menonton atau mungkin memiliki filem dan video ganas (lucah) melalui internet atau menerusi telefon bimbit”, jelas Mohd. Hainin lagi.

Sambil beliau turut mencadangkan salah satu kaedah yang perlu diberi perhatian oleh golongan ibu bapa ialah didikan agama secukupnya kepada anak-anak.

“Hanya dengan pendidikan agama, tidak kira apa jua agama harus dijadikan sebagai tunjang utama kepada setiap individu anggota isnstitusi keluarga supaya terhindar daripada sebarang perbuatan yang boleh merosakkan masa depan”, tambah Mohd. Hainin.

Porn a major reason behind baby dumping, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Widespread access to pornography and weakened family ties have led to an increase in baby dumping in the past five years, according to Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin.

“Youth today can easily have access to such material online, even through their mobile phones.

“Parents also need to guide and educate their children on sexuality,” he said yesterday at Bukit Aman.

Comm Bakri also urged the public to work closely with the police in identifying such cases.

He said sometimes neighbours or people in the community knew about such pregnancies but were not forthcoming.

He said police records showed 65 babies were dumped or abandoned up to August – bringing the total number of babies dumped or abandoned since 2005 to 472.

Of the total dumped or abandoned, more than half or 258 were found dead.

“We do not take this lightly and will investigate such cases thoroughly.

“For the record we have so far arrested 21 people and have charged six of them resulting in two of them being convicted.

“We investigate baby dumping cases under section 302 of the Penal Code for murder or Section 307 for attempted murder.

“But, the final decision rests with the Attorney-General Chambers,” he added.

“ICE” - IN CASE OF EMERGENCY NUMBER

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation,Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE."

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
