Hiring best brains as teachers
SEREMBAN 10/11/2012: Teachers may soon be hired directly from the open market to get the best brains teaching in schools, said Education Service Commission chairman Tan Sri Zulkurnain Awang.
Other measures to improve the quality of teaching in schools included immediately retiring those with medical or disciplinary problems.
There are now some 408,000 teachers on the government’s payroll.
Zulkurnain added that the intake of trainee teachers would also be tightened to ensure only the most qualified were hired.
“We also need to address problems of teachers with disciplinary and prolonged medical and mental problems, including de-pression and see how they can be immediately removed from the system,”
Why Pensiangan teachers regularly don't turn up in school
Keningau 1/11/2012: Many teachers from the peninsula and Sarawak, who filled the 50 vacancies in Pensiangan to replace those who had been sacked, have not regularly turned up in school. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) learnt this yesterday after concluding its ‘Jom Masuk U’ programme at the Malaysia Day Cultural and Education Festival in Kudat.
MOHE director-general Datuk Professor Dr Rujhan Mustafa said some 5,000 students flocked to the Kudat Sports Complex on Saturday to benefit from the programme.
More varsities will brighten Sabah future – academician
KOTA KINABALU September 6, 2012: It will be a brighter future for Sabah in many aspects if more higher learning institutions are set up in the state.
An academician with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sylvia A. Maratim, said higher education is a passport to a better life, and added that the quota system introduced in public universities under the New Economic Policy (NEP) in the 70s, and the rapidly increasing fees in private institutions, had affected the development of education in Malaysia.
“Many Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) leavers are very keen to enter public matriculation and universities but the quota is limited. Meanwhile, the fees to enter private institutions are always expensive.”
Kota Kinabalu August 26, 2012: School leaders, teachers and parents have an equally important role to play in preparing students for any important public examination, be it UPSR, PMR, SPM or STPM.
State Education Director, Datuk Dr Muhiddin Yusin, said now is a crucial time for teachers in examination classes to complete the syllabus, and students themselves must start revising their lessons.
Expressing concern, he said while students may be fully prepared in terms of being equipped with knowledge, some may not be ready to face the examination, mentally or emotionally.

He said, “the problem has lingered on for some time and has been well-publicised by the media too and it is obviously very serious as it involves the safety of the staff and students.

New S'kan, Beaufort community colleges to start intakes soon
Tawau May 20, 2012: Two new state community colleges will begin their respective intakes this year, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.
Masidi, who is also Sabah Education executive councillor, said the community college in Sandakan would start admitting students next month, while that in Beaufort, year-end or January, next year.

RANAU : A State Reform Party (Star) leader claimed that Sabah had lost every opportunities to Malaya and is losing even more as greed entrenched itself in the ruling elites who could easily find a matching capitalists.
Star's division head for Ranau, Jalibin Paidi, in a statement here said if one reflects long enough on this point, he or she would agree with his finding that Sabah had always been at the receiving end of Malayan mannouvres in the state, both politically and economically.
Take FELDA as example, he said, the Federal agency now has 300,000 acres of land in Lahad Datu and Kinabatangan. FELDA reaps around RM3 billion profits annually from its Sabah palm oil plantation. How many have we lost here for the last decades? he asked.
He said a 600-acre site in Mandahan would be ideal to set up the university as it is close to the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) here.
"The 600-acre land was initially kept aside to build a bigger Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), but later this was not carried out as the State Government decided to further develop the present KKIA into a bigger airport É which we are seeing now.
"Hence, I see there is a huge potential to develop the land for education purposes not only for Kimanis residents but also for the State as well as the country."
