Thumbs down to hike in fuel, sugar prices
December 5, 2010, KOTA KINABALU: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Central Supreme Council member cum PKR Sabah treasurer Dr Roland Chia Ming Shen has condemned the Government for its latest decision to increase the prices of RON95 grade of petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas.
Chia opined that the fuel price increases will cause inflation in the transportation sector and that will escalate prices in all sectors of the economy.
“Food will cost more and the increase in prices of daily groceries will certainly add burden to the ordinary citizens especially wage earners with families to feed, the elderly and also the pensioners.
“Even our oil producing neighboring country Brunei Darussalam sells its fuel at a price that is 40 per cent lower than Malaysia so why can’t we have a similar pricing in terms of pumped fuel in the kiosk,” he said.
According to Chia, the sudden announcement by the Government and “lightning fast” implementation in less than seven hours was a cheap and cunning trick by the Government.
If its intention was genuine, the hikes would have been planned and implemented in stages with prior full public notice, he said, adding, “this is an ambush tactic because the government is afraid of public reaction.”
On another issue, Chia said he was puzzled with the reason given by the Government with regards to the withdrawal of subsidies.
“The Government claimed that the subsidy withdrawal is to save the money yet it still insists to build the 100-storey tower. Just like the Petronas Twin Towers, this 1Malaysia Tower once completed will see all the government linked companies (GLCs) forced to rent out all the floors, thus reducing the cost of maintaining the project,” he pointed out.
“Where does it benefit the ordinary rakyat? What needs to be removed are not the subsidies but corruption which is costing the country at least RM4.0 billion annually instead of the expected savings of RM1.9 billion from subsidy cuts,” he said.
This certainly does not augur well with the 1Malaysia concept of “Rakyat Didahulukan Pencapaian Diutamakan” (people first development now), Chia lamented.

December 03, 2010, Kota Kinabalu: Sabah DAP demanded the Government to scrap the Cabotage Policy, pointing out people in the State would be on the losing end now with the recent hike in the RON97 fuel price.
Its Secretary Dr Edwin Bosi reminded that any fuel price increase will have a drastic effect on the price of goods in Sabah, adding the Cabotage Policy required all shipments to go through Port Klang first before coming here.
"This policy has somewhat raised the cost of goods by at least 25 per cent and Sabahans are paying through their noses. Those having interest in the Cabotage Policy are laughing all the way to the bank.
This is indeed 1Malaysia 2Prices. What happened to the calls to scrap this policy?
"According to the Government, this (fuel price hike) is necessary due to an increase in the price of crude oil in the world marketÉthe question is, are we not an oil producer?" he said.
The Cabotage Policy also retards the economic growth of the State, he added.

No one likes price hike. I just hope this will not affect the people too badly.
BalasPadamIt's not going to be easy for the people to accept the increase of price in fuel. This is too sudden. First it was RON97, now it's RON95. Hopefully the price wouldn't increase again.
BalasPadamI justhope the govt would implement the "same price" system in East & West Malaysia very soon .
BalasPadamIt was mentioned that 10 items would be under this category.
It is good to reduce the cost of living in E.Malaysia esp. in Sabah.
BalasPadam“Even our oil producing neighboring country Brunei Darussalam sells its fuel at a price that is 40 per cent lower than Malaysia so why can’t we have a similar pricing in terms of pumped fuel in the kiosk,” he said.
BalasPadamYa amir. memang agak membebankan. Lain ceritalah kalau gaji dinaikkan. hehehe
BalasPadamGovernment should look the purchasing power or income of the people first before deciding to raise the price of petrol.
BalasPadamMemang betul kenaikan harga minyak sedikit sebanyak mempengaruhi kos pengangkutan. Jadi apakah mekanisme yang sesuai?
BalasPadamToo many prices of things have been increased. I'm getting poor now!!
BalasPadamKenaikan harga minyak memang membantut perjalanan saya. Adakah minyak dunia akan naik? Arab Saudi terlalu kaya.
BalasPadamPoor us.
BalasPadamKenaikkan barang perlu diselaraskan dengan kenaikkan gaji...please!
