'HIRE LOCAL NURSING GRADS'

'Hire local nursing grads'

FAIR CHANCE 07 May 2012: Health Ministry urges private hospitals to employ experienced locally-trained nurses

THE Health Ministry has called on private hospitals to recruit experienced locally-trained nurses rather than hire foreign ones  to reach the targeted nurse-patient ratio by 2015.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Rashid Shirlin said the current nurse-patient ratio was 1:347 and the target was to achieve 1:200 by 2015, as set by the World Health Organisation.

"We are doing our best to ensure that. I'm confident we can achieve that. Private hospitals should also take part in this initiative by recruiting local nursing graduates."

Rosnah said private hospitals had hired 8,052 foreign nurses.

"We should give fresh graduates a chance. Why can't private hospitals take them in?"

She said the ministry trained 5,000 nurses annually.

"We (the ministry) are doing our part very well. We are not against foreign nurses. We have 916 nurses working overseas.

"I'm just saying the locals should have a fair chance to be employed locally," said Rosnah after launching the health campaign organised by the Malaysian Nurses Association here yesterday.

JOBS IN NURSING HARD TO COME BY FOR GRADUATES

IF THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT TAKE ANY ACTION, OUR JOB MARKET WILL BE FLOODED WITH UNEMPLOYED NURSING GRADUATES

MAHSA'S CLAIM THAT THOUSANDS MORE NURSES ARE NEEDED IN THE COUNTRY IS IRRESPONSIBLE IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THERE'S AN OVER-SUPPLY OF GRADUATES, SAYS PSM.

  1. Currently there is a surplus of demand but not enough job opportunity. All medical schools in the country should stop taking in nursing students because the chances of getting a job once graduating is very scarce.

  2. The Medical Ministry and Education Ministry should request all medical schools to set a quota, once the quota of students have been reached, they shouldn't take in anymore students. This is to prevent too much nursing grads but not enough jobs.

  9. If you want the job you must be good enough in that field . You should know how to promote your skill, sell your skill and do whatever to make people believe that you are deserve to get the job. There is no need to set a quota, we are not going to shut down any hosp or clinic but i am 100% sure there will be more clinic and hosp in the future.
