Look into plight of the jobless nursing grads
By: Kangku Da'a
I REFER to your recent report on the high number of jobless nurses in Malaysia as highlighted by Dr Michael Jayakumar.
According to report taken from government study, in 2010 more than 54pc private nursing diploma graduates could not find job within three to four months after graduating.
For me, this news is alarming as there are few private nursing colleges in Sabah at the moment.
I have my sister and several nieces studying at some private nursing college around Kota Kinabalu.
Browsing through official portal of Nursing Division Ministry of Health Malaysia, there are 51 private colleges and Ministry of Health nursing institutions listed with them. From the list, the students graduating from nursing colleges should reach thousands every year.
What is the yearly requirement?
As according to Dr Micheal, the requirement is only 1,500 new nurses a year. If 10,000 nurses graduated in 2011, where will the 8,500 go?
They have to look for another job that does not match their qualification.
Some of them might end up as clerks or cashiers.
On the other hand, it's not easy for nursing graduates from private colleges to enter government hospitals as the Government also have their own supply from their nursing institutions.
My major concern is towards unemployed graduates.
From my observation, many of the nursing college students are young girls. How are they going to pay the PTPTN loan given to them?
A diploma in nursing needs at least RM50,000 to RM60,000 for a three-year course.
This high amount will be problem to those graduates who are unemployed or working with low pay (working with another sector).
Those defaulters risk being blacklisted and, worst, bankruptcy.
It also will become a burden to the family if the student is from a low income family.
I agree to the memorandum forwarded by Dr Micheal that the intake of new nurses should be frozen, and control the passing mark for Nursing Board Examination.
If the Government does not take any action, our job market will be flooded with unemployed nursing graduates.
---------------
If we already know that the local medical sector does not require that much nursing students, than our students should consider taking other courses that has more job demand in the workforce.
BalasPadamIf not mistaken, our country is currently lacking teachers in the education sector, perhaps more people to consider taking education as their course instead.
BalasPadamBah, kalau begitu bagus ambilah bidang perguruan untuk memenuhi keperluan tenaga guru dalam negara.
PadamRasanya perlu ada quota kemasukan pengajian kejururawatan. Kalau tidak ramai lagi yang akan menganggur.
BalasPadamdah terlalu byk pengambilan dalam bidang ini hingga melebihi permintaan. jadi ia perlu dikawal.
PadamBetul, Rabbit.
PadamI agree that the intake of new nurses should be frozen and at the same time, the government need to open more hospital branches and also undertake studies to identify which hospitals in this country are still face a shortage of staffs/nurse...
BalasPadamPembekuan pengambilan pelajar dalam bidang ini mungkin perlu di lakukan bagi mengelakkan lebih banyak pelajar yang menganggur.
Padamsome IPT are only concern about their profits instead of the future of their students.. so, the government also needs to investigate this matter and if there's any institution of higher education where more than 50% of its students are still unemployed after graduation, then the government should stop them from continuing their business..
BalasPadamMaybe there is a reason to why there are many nurses are not employed. The government can't simply employ just anyone to be a nurse.
BalasPadamThere are important traits that nurses must have.. They must be a caring nature, empathetic, detail-oriented,emotionally stable, adaptable, physical endurance, quick Thinker, hard-working,and have good Communication Skills.I find these traits very important in order for the working process to run smoothly in the hospital.
PadamPekerjaan kurang manakala graduan semakin bertambah.
BalasPadamLebihan lepasan Nursing boleh kita lihat sendiri. Ini kerana peluang untuk nursing kurang namun mereka yang tamat pembelajaran semakin ramai.
BalasPadamWe should have the preventive action so that, when we facing such problem, it can be solve on the spot.
BalasPadamThis is a serious matter. They can't do other things except for nursing. So, maybe we need to have more Hospitals or clinics.
BalasPadamThose who have an offer to become a nurse, better give a consideration. Grab the other offer if you have more other than to become a nurse.
