FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION NOT A LICENSE TO SLANDER - MASIDI

Freedom of speech and expression not a license to slander - Masidi

17th January, 2011 KOTA KINABALU : Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun said he would wait for the police investigation against local artist, Atama, before considering taking any legal action against him for allegedly slandering him on Facebook.

He said this when asked by reporters on his reaction towards a photo posted on the social networking site which implicated him, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan for being in cahoots to put a wool over the Kadazandusuns’ eyes over issues affecting the state.

“Well, to me, I put it in a simple way. If people say some not so good things about others,it merely reflects their own character…there’s a saying that goes “it takes a monkey to call another person a monkey,” he said upon arrival at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) from the MAS inaugural flight between Kota Kinabalu and Perth here yesterday.

Masidi added that freedom of speech and expression does not mean it is a license to slander.

“I think we should be responsible enough,” he said.

When asked whether he thinks the act was immature, Masidi said : “Well,unfortunately..I would say that not everyone is equal. Some are more childish than others. I think that’s how I look at it.”

Six Exco members from the Party Bersatu Sabah (PBS) youth division, led by deputy chief, Webley Disim, had lodged a police report on January 14 (Friday), urging them to identify the owner of the Facebook profile that had been linked to local musician, Atama.

  23. Its been more than 30days since the police report against Atama. Yet there is no news. If the police have not found a case against the rapper; what the hell is this minister blabering about 'slandering' ? Instead Atama should make a police report against Masidi for clearly slandering Atama in the mainstream media! Innocent until proven gulity. Fairness & Freedom for all.
