“IF TEACHERS ARE FOUND TO UNDER PERFORMING OR NOT CARRYING OUT THE DUTIES ENTRUSTED TO THEM, WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO TAKE ACTION,” - DR MUHIDDIN

Absteentism among offences committed by teachers in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Some 267 teachers in Sabah are in trouble for committing various disciplinary offences including being late and absteenism.

Sabah Education Department director Dr Muhiddin Yusin said 117 of these teachers have been issued show-cause letters while the remaining 150 would be issued such letters soon.

“We have to take firm action against such teachers to ensure the profession remains relevant and respected by the community,” he said after launching the teachers day gathering in Sabah east coast district of Tawau on Saturday.

He said he would conduct surprise visits to schools in the state to check on the performance of teachers.

“If teachers are found to under performing or not carrying out the duties entrusted to them, we will not hesitate to take action,” Dr Muhiddin added.

Last month, Dr Muhiddin was quoted as saying that checks by the Education Ministry’s School Inspectorate officials found that some teachers in Sabah had taken “early holidays.”

The teachers concerned gone home to the peninsular well before the school holidays that was due to begin only June 5.

Some parents had complained of teachers had taken their holidays as early as May 24.

Dr Muhiddin acknowledged that the department had received complaints of absent teachers but action could not be taken as there was a lack of details including names and dates.

  4. Yes, action should be taken immediately towards the irresponsible teachers. I wouldn't want my kids to be taught by unprofessional teachers. These teachers are setting a bad example to the students. Its like they are telling them its ok to be late or its ok to 'ponteng'.

  7. Find out why the teachers behave these ways before you jude them.

It is important to get teachers who have the passion in this profession and not just for the pay or job security. This is one of the criteria to be a teacher.

Lets them set a good example to the younger generation. Thanks teacher !!
