MORE WOMAN SHOULD CONTEST IN ELECTION

More women should contest in elections – Sari Nuar

KOTA KINABALU Feb 21, 2012: Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) president Datuk Seri Panglima Sari Nuar urged more women to contest as candidates in elections.

He said women constitute half of the voters and qualified women should stand out to contest as YBs (Yang Berhormat).

Speaking at the FCAS women appreciation night here on Sunday, Sari also urged Chinese leaders to contemplate whether donations or sponsorships obtained for organizing activities achieved the desired effect.

He pointed out that many Chinese community leaders and political figures agreed to donate or sponsor various activities organized by the Chinese community, but they should determine whether the money spent had indeed brought about an impact to the society.

“Many approach our YBs for donations daily but their financial power is limited,” he explained.

In addition, Sari urged FCAS Women and Youth to communicate the Government Transformation Plan (GTP) and Economic Transformation Plan (ETP) to other associations, their members and the public.

He pointed out that many Chinese in Sabah did not fully understand what GTP entailed and thus community leaders should explain how they could move forward with GTP to the community.

“We want Sabah to be the richest and most developed state in Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, FCAS women chief Datuk Agnes Shim Tshin Nyuk said the number of women contributing to the country’s development had doubled over the past 10 years.

According to statistics last year, there are a total of 434,200 knowledgeable women aged 15 to 64 from all races being employed in various types of profession, compared to 238,263 in 2000.

“In addition, the statistics showed a significant increase of women holding top managerial posts in white-collar professions.

“This indicates that women are playing a more important role and showing their capabilities in various fields,” she said in her speech.

The statistics last year also showed that Sabahan women made up 48.3 per cent, or 1.55 million, of the population in the State.

There are a total of 142,425 Chinese women in Malaysia, comprising 9.2 per cent of the population. Sabahan women made up 4.4 per cent of the total population in the country.

Shim further urged women to prepare themselves for future challenges and women nowadays have to multi-task at home and at work.

She also encouraged women to join or lead associations and do their part in contributing to the country’s development and progress, which in turn would enhance their status in society.

“In the Chinese community, women not only have to be a good mother and daughter-in-law, but also the mental pillars of their husbands and children.

“At the same time, women have to work hard in their career – politics, education, sports, healthcare, cultural and so on; their importance and status in these fields should not be disregarded.”

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Pang Yuk Ming, Batu Sapi member of parliament Datin Linda Tsen, Sabah Chinese Cultural Association president Datuk Chau Tet On, Kota Kinabalu Hokkien Association president Datuk Clement Yeh and Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) vice president Datuk Lau Kok Sing and FCAS deputy president Datuk TC Goh.

Malaysian women in Sabah are fortunate unlike their counterparts in some countries, who have absolutely no place or say in society.

in the Sabah context, women have exerted more or less an overwhelming influence in areas such as the education sector.

"If you look at the schools, the majority of teachers are ladies,"
