Chia: State govt should stop Petronas if serious about oil and gas development
KOTA KINABALU: The State government should not have agreed to or allowed Petronas to siphon the natural gas from offshore of Sabah to Bintulu in the first place, if it was really serious about developing the local oil and gas industries, said Luyang State Assemblywoman, Melanie Chia.
For the same token, Petronas should not have even think of such a plan let alone pushing for it despite strong objection from the people of Sabah, besides Federal Cabinet’s instruction (to Petronas) to give priority to Sabah if the State required the resources, as what has been noted by Plantation Industries and Commodity Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in his statement two months ago.
Dompok also said that there was a guarantee that no gas will be transported to Sarawak through the Kimanis-Bintulu pipeline if there is a need for gas in Sabah.
Melanie who is also the Women Chief for Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) contended this while responding to a statement by State Industrial Development Minister, Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah on Friday, that Petronas will only agree to let Sabah keep portion of the gas channeled to the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal if it is able to substantially build up its infrastructure and manpower to support the oil and gas industry in Sabah.
She further said the siphoning of Sabah natural gas to Sarawak clearly showed that Petronas was never sincere to allow Sabah to develop its gas industry.
“They (Petronas) have been taking our resources since 1976. Until today, we do not see any development in gas downstream industries in Sabah. This somehow caused many people to wonder why a state like Melaka which has no natural gas and oil can have downstream industries in oil and gas,” she said.
----
“It would be much better for us to have our own oil and gas industry than just send gas to Bintulu. That is why there is an urgency to have industrial activities started in Sabah to tap the availability of the gas from Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal at Kimanis,”
BalasPadamAgree with u Johnny...in reality is we still dont have the capability to develop our own oil industry without the help from Petronas.
BalasPadamAs the national petroleum producer, Petronas has a social responsibility to help any states in Malaysia to develop its oil industry. But in turn, States has to oblige some of the terms & condition that has been set by the Petronas.
I think should not just kick the Petronas out, they should finish and fix the mess as for they are the one who starts it. And Again please do something new or any development, which mean any new technology...
BalasPadamif we earnestly make such request in 1976 or during the early arrival of Petronas to Sabah, we will now have our own gas industry.
BalasPadamIt's never too late or too early to demand something positive.
BalasPadamSokong Jonny! Hendak seribu daya, tak hendak seribu dalih... hehe
BalasPadamTapi kalau just kick out petronas tak munasabah juga kan... Sepatutnya bg peluang utk perbaiki dan tanggani permasalahan yg timbul. Jika semuanya sudah OK senang utk Sabah bergerak di jalan yg baru :)
BalasPadamYa boY. Saya tak nafikan sabah mmg berpotensi besar dalam industri minyak dan gas, tapi saya yakin kerajaan pasti ada alasan yg munasabah utk berbuat demikian.
BalasPadamIf Petronas refuse to help us out, why sticks?
BalasPadamKeputusan tidak harus dibuatkan berdasarkan penilaian secara emosional. Memang cadangan ini boleh dipertimbangkan tapi hampir semua sumber kita diambil Petronas. Tidak kah kita rugi?
BalasPadamI think it's time for us to have our very own downstream of oil and gas development. The clock is ticking and there is no time to waste..
BalasPadamAs I said, Sabah has to be ready to face the challenge. We can't depend too much on Petronas to do those things for us. We have nature sources, 120% better than them.
