“HIS HEAD, LEFT HAND AND LEFT LEG WERE MISSING. WE BELIEVE THE CROCODILE HAD EATEN THEM,” - ACP IBRAHIM CHIN

Croc kills Indonesian plantation worker

TAWAU: A 45-year-old Indonesian oil palm plantation worker was killed last Sunday morning by a crocodile in Sungai Kalumpang here, about four kilometres from the sea.The victim, identified as Basri Madi, was in the river with six friends about 11am catching a type of fish locally called ‘kepal’ (fistful), district police chief ACP Ibrahim Chin said yesterday.

A crocodile which was said to be about four feet wide and 10 feet long dragged Basri down and disappeared quickly into the water, he said.

Ibrahim said this was the second crocodile attack at the place after the one in 2008.

The police searched for Basri and found his body hooked to a tree near the river about 4pm on Monday, he said.

“His head, left hand and left leg were missing. We believe the crocodile had eaten them,” Ibrahim said, adding that the hospital confirmed later that the victim was attacked by a crocodile judging by the several bite marks on his body.

“The case has been classified as sudden death,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police detained 26 illegal immigrants allegedly involved in a short-messaging service (SMS) syndicate at two different places here last May 29 during a special operation.

Ibrahim said the police also seized a variety of equipment like cell phones which the syndicate used to send SMS to the public in promoting a variety of goods and luxurious prizes with the intention to cheat.

“We will continue to carry out operations and investigations into this case and we urge the public not to fall victims to such tactics. Do not respond to such SMS,” he added.

The police here have so far received two reports from two victims earlier in connection with the scam.
