FORMALDEHYDE - A HARMFUL CHEMICAL USED FOR PRESERVING THE DEAD – USE AMONG FISHMONGERS HERE?

Formalin in fish: Call to scrap the permits

Tawau: The public health committee of the Tawau Municipal Council has been urged to discuss the use of formaldehyde - a harmful chemical used for preserving the dead - among fishmongers here.

Deputy President Tai Yun Wu said this is to enable action to be taken to protect the Rakyats' health.

Earlier, counsellor Halimah Yahya suggested that the trading licences of these fishmongers be revoked.

Counsellor Ayaz Khan Yunus Khan also agreed action must be taken fast.

"The formaldehyde is a form of poison that could cause the lungs to harden.

"The relevant department must conduct inspections at the fish market because people buy fish almost everyday," he said.

On grease traps in fastfood restaurants, Halimah suggested that alternative action be applied because warnings issued to the operators seemed inadequate.

"Action should also be taken against the bigger franchisees who have committed an offence where health is concerned," he said.

He asked whether the Health Department was afraid to compound large companies.

On other developments, the municipal public health committee said the Tawau Health Department has closed down 25 stalls at the Central Market for various health-related offences.

The stalls would only be reopened after the operators or owners fulfil the requirements.
