KOTA KINABALU: The nation’s first submarine base at the Sepanggar naval station is on track for completion by June.
Royal Malaysian Navy Region Two Commander Laksamana Pertama Syed Zahiruddin Putra Syed Osman said construction of the submarine base was in its final stage.
“This will be just in time to receive our first submarine in July,” he said here yesterday.
According to him, construction of the submarine jetty and major buildings had been completed as well as quarters for 200 submariners and officers.
“Various preparations are now under way to receive our first submarine – the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman,” he added.
Laksamana Pertama Syed Zahiruddin said personnel and officers would strive to make the submarine base among the world’s best facilities.
He said the nation’s second submarine – KD Tun Abdul Razak – was due to arrive by end of the year.
