UMS to continue emphasis on research and innovation
KOTA KINABALU May 24, 2012: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will continue to emphasise on providing the best facilities for promoting research and innovation.
Vice chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon said apart from research incentives, the university would also continue to provide grant and seed money, especially for young researchers as well as research fund for postgraduate research.
“The university will also continue providing allocation for protecting intellectual properties and sponsoring students and academicians to attend or participate in exhibition, competition and other related events both at national and international levels,” he said.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the UMS Research and Innovation Competition (PEREKA) 2012 at the university main campus here yesterday.
Kamaruzaman said intellectual properties derived from research and innovation were crucial assets to a university and could generate sizable income if properly commercialized.
He said through collaboration with MyIPO last year, UMS Sabah successfully provided protection to 44 intellectual properties through patent and industrial design copyright.
Some of these properties have been evaluated and a few products are already in the process of commercialization.
“In addition, following last year’s PEREKA, UMS has participated in various innovation competitions, including the Malaysian Technology Expo (MTE), BioMalaysia, i-NOVA, PECIPTA and IENA-International Trade Fair in Germany.
“Through these events, UMS won eight gold, 11 silver and seven bronze awards. A number of the winning products are also being commercialized now through smart partnership with the industry,” he said.
Kamaruzaman also expressed hope that more inventions and researches from PEREKA 2012, which is the fifth edition, could be brought to compete at the national and international events and be commercialized in the near future.
