Sabah govt probes arson at two timber camps

MUSA-AMAN KOTA KINABALU Jan 10, 2012: The Sabah government has ordered a probe into the alleged arson at two timber camps by villagers claiming encroachment by a timber company, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said yesterday.

The state government was concerned over the incident and regarded the matter as serious, he said when asked to comment on the matter.

imageAbout 50 villagers of Kampung Alab in Sook, Keningau, reportedly set fire to two timber camps belonging to Bornion Timber Sdn Bhd on Wednesday, alleging that the company had encroached onto 10,000 acres (about 4,000 hectares) around the village cultivated with rubber, vegetables, rice and other crops.

They also reportedly lodged a police report the following day claiming that the company had bulldozed their ancestral burial grounds.

The villagers were quoted as claiming that they were fed up that their 10-year-old problem pertaining to land had yet to be resolved.

“If they (villagers) have problems, they should find a way to solve it through the proper channels and not take the law into their own hands,” Musa told reporters after meeting staff of federal government departments and agencies at the Federal Government Administrative Complex in Likas, near here, today.

Asked whether his office had received a report on the arson, Musa said he had yet to receive any report.

“I’m waiting for the report,” he said.

    Hope that no one has taken the law into their own hands to solve this sort of issues. They should let the authorities take actions.

    I Agree with Fran...the villagers involve should not take matters into their own hands. This will give an impression that our beloved Sabah is in a state of anarchy.

    Kerajaan negeri sudah memerintahkan untuk menyiasat perkara ini. harap penduduk tidak lagi mengambil tindakan melulu dan mengikut perasaan.

    Sememangnya tidak wajar mengambil tindakan dengan terburu-buru, diharapkan kerajaan akan cuba sedaya upaya untuk membantu rakyat menyelesaikan masalah tanah NCR mereka.

    siasat insiden ini dan jika penduduk kampung didapati bersalah, bawa saja mereka ke muka pengadilan.. jika sebaliknya, kerajaan dan syarikat yang terlibat perlu bertanggungjawab..
