SABAH SAND MONOPOLY PROPOSAL

Shareda urges transparency in sand supply, pricing

KOTA KINABALU Dec 17, 2011: Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) president Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen has called for transparency and efficiency of control in the supply and pricing of sand.

Wong was commenting on the proposal revealed by Land and Survey Department director Datuk Osman Jamal that the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) would be given the exclusive rights to extract sand in Sabah beginning June 1 in a move to stop sand theft.

She said all business monopoly has its pros and cons, but she hoped it would not cause an increase in sand price or shortage of sand.

Wong said that sand in Selangor was also monopolized by a company, and it has led to ridiculously high sand prices, and sand has to be imported from Perak.

She hopes that the scenario would not happen in Sabah.

SAPP questions sand monopoly proposal

“How can SEDCO enforce against sand thefts? It has zero enforcement personnel and no statutory power to seize machinery, investigate, arrest or prosecute. So, people are entitled to draw their own conclusions,”

“This is another slap in the face of the business community which is already struggling against rising fuel prices, reduced banking credit and uncertainties over the global currency crisis,”

SAPP president Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee

SEDCO gets exclusive rights to sand dredging operations in the state

The Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) will be given exclusive rights to oversee sand dredging operations in the state effective from June 2012.

image“During this six months, we will inform the operator about the latest development as we don’t want to make an abrupt decision. In fact, the State Government has agreed in principle to give exclusive rights to SEDCO,”

“The existing operators are still allowed to continue with their operations now until their license expire, after that they will have to liaise with SEDCO and become their agent as the license is renewable once a year. And most of the existing licenses is expected to lapse in one or two years from now”

  3. That good, given Sedco only sand rights to reduce sand thefts in Sabah. but sand extraction operators could become agents to Sedco once their licences have expired. but on this matter hope Sedco will fairy to all agents.

  4. mungkin mulai sekarang para operators perlu berbincang dengan Sedco untuk meneruskan mengusaha pasir melalui menjadi agen kepada Sedco dan perlu tahu juga kriteria2 yang sedco mahu.

  15. Alo all,

I support this proposal.. Even SEDCO given full authority in dealing with the sand dredging activities in Sabah begins next June, the fate of the existing contractor is under contract with the state government would not be suppressed. So nothing to scared and why should protest it.

  16. Each of the remaining contract will continue until it expires, and for which has expired, they must deal directly with the SEDCO for a new contract.

Not only is stealing sand activity can be overcome, it will also help the state get a better income, and the process of dealing with contracts among contractors sand will also be accelerated.
