New Health D-G appointed

PETALING JAYA: Deputy Health director-general (public health) Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman has been appointed as the new Health director-general effective yesterday.

Dr Hasan replaces Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican whose contract ended on March 4, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan said in a statement.

“His (Dr Hasan’s) appointment was based on his wide experience and excellent performance.

“We are confident that his experience and deep knowledge will enable him to lead the medical fraternity and the support staff within and outside the public service well, especially in implementing policies and efforts to enhance the quality of health and medical care for the public,” Sidek said.

Dr Hasan, 55, who has a Masters degree in public health and a bachelor’s degree in medicine – both from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia – began his service as a doctor with the Health Ministry on May 2, 1981.

He was made the Infectious Disease Control director in 2007 and was promoted to the deputy director-general’s post in October 2009.

Dr Hasan also sits on the Infection Control and Antibiotics Committee and the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health executive committee.

Sidek thanked Dr Ismail for all his contributions and excellent service to the public for 35 years.
