NEW KK MAYOR PLEDGES TO BE 'MAYOR FOR ALL'

New mayor pledges to be 'mayor for all'

2011/02/09 KOTA KINABALU: The city's first Kadazandusun mayor after 11 years, has promised to be a mayor for all.

Datuk Abidin Madingkir, a 57-year-old formally trained lawyer, said he was aware of the public and taxpayers' high expectations and would try his best not to misplace their trust in him.

"I would like to emphasise that I am a mayor for all.

"All development plans and upgrading will be for the good of the citizens here," he said in a speech at a handing over ceremony here yesterday.

Abidin, a Dusun from Ranau, began his first day at work yesterday, after the modest handing-over ceremony from his predecessor, Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim, who held the post for six years, or three two-year terms.

Abidin's appointment was welcomed by Kadazandusun-based parties who had been lobbying vigorously to have a Kadazandusun Murut to helm the city.

The Chinese community had also been pushing for a Chinese mayor.

Abidin has wide experience in the public service, having held various senior government posts over a number of years, including permanent secretary of the state Local Government and Housing Ministry, just before he was appointed mayor.

Abidin said he would work hard to carry out the five year strategic plan to make City Hall more efficient and customer friendly, as well as increase the quality of life for city dwellers.
