550,000 FOREIGN WORKERS REGISTERED IN SABAH UNDER THE REGULARISATION PROGRAMME BUT ONLY 125,000 UNDERWENT MEDICAL CHECK-UPS

ONLY 25% FOREIGN WORKERS CHECKED

SANDAKAN: Despite medical check-ups being mandatory for foreign workers before employment, only about 25 per cent were examined medically according to the findings of two regularisation exercises in 2008 and 2009.

There were 550,000 foreign workers registered in Sabah under the regularisation programme but only 125,000 underwent medical check-ups.

A large number of them apparently did not undergo the mandatory examination following a letter supposedly issued by a government department exempting them for specific reasons.

Health Minister Dato Liow Tiong Lai however, categorically stated that foreign workers intending to work in the country must be medically examined.

“This is a serious issue and we will look into the matter. The Health Ministry will take the necessary action against anyone attempting to twist the facts,” Liow said.
