KOTA KINABALU June 10, 2012: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) secretary-general Datuk Henrynus Amin described the recent arrest of several people, including a National Registration Department officer in Putrajaya, as only “the tip of an iceberg”.
Believing that there is more to the it, he urged the police to dig deeper into the activities of syndicates issuing genuine identity cards (ICs) using fraudulent documents such as statutory declarations and birth certificates.
He said while PBS hailed the arrest, they also proposed that all ICs given to any individuals using statutory declaration must be treated as suspect and investigated because these syndicates used fraudulent statutory declaration to apply for identification documents.
“PBS suspects hundreds of thousands of ICs may have been issued using dubious statutory declarations obtained from corrupt and irresponsible native chiefs,” he said.
He added that the main Terms of Reference of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) should be to investigate the activities of IC syndicates specialising in issuing fraudulent statutory declarations to help illegal immigrants obtain genuine ICs.
Henrynus said the authorities must also investigate foreigners with dubious origins who claimed to be Malaysians.
“They now own trading licences and dominate certain trade, apply or buy native land that they are not entitled to, not to mention being employed in government departments including the military and security agencies.
“The arrest of an NRD official proved that the IC syndicates have been operating with impunity for more than 30 years.
“It is time to stop and weed out these illegal syndicates embedded in the deep layers of government through the implementation of the RCI once and for all,” Henrynus said.
