EC urged to probe ‘twin IC numbers’ claim
TAWAU April 8, 2012: Member of parliament Datuk Chua Soon Bui has issued a call for the Election Commission (EC) to verify the authenticity of a complaint she had received from the public alleging that the old identity card number of a senior teacher attached to one of the government schools in the district is being shared by another person residing in Kota Belud.
Chua said at a press conference yesterday that she had forwarded the identity card number to the relevant minister and to the EC for verification so as to determine as to who is the original holder of that identity card number.
“The other person who holds the same identity card number is in Kota Belud and we want to know who of the two is the authentic citizen,” she said.
Chua expressed extreme surprise by the EC being unable detect the anomaly.
The Education Department too had never questioned why the teacher was still holding an old identity card when all citizens in the country were required to change their identity cards twice in the past and are currently holding Mykads.
She stressed, “this goes to show the importance and the necessity of establishing the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) for Sabah. Cases as such have not been detected and this instance may only be the tip of the iceberg.
“I hope for the present government to possess the political will and sincerity to respond to the call for an RCI made by the people. The people cannot be fooled by excuses after excuses anymore,” she said.
