STAR SABAH HAD 2 CANDIDATES CONTESTING IN SABAH 1999 ELECTIONS

‘Much misunderstanding in STAR Sabah’s status’

image KOTA KINABALU Jan 13, 2012: The chairman of the State Reform Party (STAR) Sabah Chapter, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, expressed regret and surprise over misunderstanding with regards to the status of STAR Sabah.

He said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with STAR opening a chapter in Sabah because there is a clear provision in its constitution for the establishment of branches.

“It is a Malaysian-registered party which can operate throughout the country, and there is absolutely no provision in its constitution which says it can operate only within Sarawak,” Jeffrey assured.

“This is a none issue, a case of a misunderstanding caused by people asking the wrong question and then getting the wrong answer,” he stressed.

“Someone asked if STAR Sabah is registered and the Registrar of Societies confirmed there is none. But it is just like asking if STAR Kota Kinabalu division is registered, and if there is none, then the ROS would have to confirm there is none because the registration of the division has not been submitted yet!”

He pointed out that under the same technicality, Umno Sabah is also not registered.

“Try asking the ROS if Umno Sabah is registered. I believe they will answer in the negative. But does that make Umno Sabah illegal? I don’t think so. And for that matter is PKR Sabah, or DAP Sabah or PAS Sabah or Gerakan Sabah registered?”

He said he was surprised that certain quarters had suddenly raised the question of STAR Sabah’s status when other parties from outside Sabah had never gone under such question.

“Clearly certain groups are worried about the advances made by STAR in such a short time,” he said.

“But the fact that STAR had two candidates contesting in Kudat and Marudu in the parliamentary general elections in 1999 confirms without question that STAR can expand to Sabah, or any part of Malaysia, since at least since 12 years ago,” he stressed.

“Before this people ridiculed STAR. They said STAR is a nobody and don’t worry about STAR. But now apparently somebody is worried,”

In fact, he said Dr Jeffrey and his men went to Kuala Lumpur to check for themselves the status of STAR and all legality aspects involved before accepting the invitation to form the Sabah Chapter.
