SEC HOPES THE STATE GOVERNMENT WILL GIVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR LOCAL CONTRACTORS AND LOCAL PEOPLE IN SABAH TO EXPAND THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN OIL AND GAS RELATED ACTIVITIES TO GAIN MORE EXPERIENCE - HARUN

SEC leaves decision on lead role to State Govt

Kota Kinabalu September 15, 2011: Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd (SEC) is leaving it to the State Government to decide which of its agencies or government-linked companies is to take the lead role in the State's oil and gas industry.

image Its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Datuk Harun Haji Ismail said it is the State Government and Chief Minister's prerogative to decide on this, although the corporation is ready if asked to shoulder the responsibility.

"We are always ready actually. SEC, and I believe the other state agencies and GLCs, are ready if entrusted to take the lead or become a focal point in the State's oil and gas business É we have the capabilities, so I think there is no problem,"

he said.

image Also, SEC has a very good relationship with Petronas and the other major oil and gas companies, he said during a Hari Raya open house held at his residence in Likas.

He was asked to comment on the Sabah Oil and Gas Contractors Association's (SOGCA) recent call to the government to give SEC the leading role in the State's oil and gas industry development.

SOGCA President Datuk Iskandar Abdul Malik, had said presently everybody in the industry still do not know who is actually leading the industry, as government-linked agencies in State seemed to be competing with each other.

When asked on the problems faced by the State's oil and gas contractors, Harun said presently there are only a limited number of them venturing into oil and gas activities related to processing.

"Many of them (local oil and gas contractors), or over 50 per cent of the total, are involved in oil and gas non-processing activities like in civil works, jetty construction and so on. So SEC hopes the government will give more opportunities to our local contractors to expand their involvement in oil and gas related activities to gain more experience," he said.

Opportunity should be given to the local contractors, he said, adding that it is for this reason that SEC always emphasised that talented local contractors be given more opportunities in the State's oil and gas industry.

"Because oil and gas activity is something that is currently booming in Sabah.

Not only the contractors should be given the opportunity but also local people in Sabah should be trained and work in this field to gain more experiences," he said.

Harun said SEC is currently working with another group to help local youth get proper training at the various training institutions in the State.

"But this is presently still in the planning stage," he said.

    agak sukar untuk menceburi bidang ini dan mendapatkan kontrak jika tiada pengalaman dan kemahiran berkaitan. jadi, diharap generasi2 muda mengambil peluang untuk melanjutkan pelajaran dan mengambil kemahiran berkaitan bidang ini agar di masa akan datang mereka dapat menguasai keseluruhan sektor ini dan tiada lagi alasan di mana rakyat tempatan tidak berkelayakan.

    jika kadar royalti tidak dinaikkan, janganlah pula kontrak pun diberikan pada orang luar juga. biarlah sektor minyak dan gas Sabah, Sabahan yang lebih dapat manfaat dan kelebihan.

    Memang banyak syarikat dan kontraktor di Sabah mempunyai potensi dan latar belakang yang baik untuk handle projek termasuk minyak dan gas. Seharus diberi peluang untuk membuktikan kebolehan masing-masing.

    jika terdapat kontraktor tempatan yang layak diberikan peluang dalam industri ini atau belia2 sabahan yang mempunyai latarbelakang dalam industri ini, mereka memang patut diberikan keutamaan lebih2 lagi industri ini berkembang di negeri ini..
