RANAU May 26, 2011: A boy who had just turned three on Tuesday, May 24, died after he was savagely mauled by a dog at Kampung Matan here yesterday.
Bite wounds on Mohd Raqib’s body.
The victim, identified as Mohd Raqib Mohd Rasili, died at about 9.30pm in the Incentive Care Unit of Ranau District Hospital, about 14 hours after the attack at 7.30am.
The boy had earlier received 30 stitches to close wounds all over his body.
Mohd Raqib was found in a pool of blood in a drain near his cousin’s home by one of his uncles.
Prior to the boy’s death, his 26-year-old mother said a doctor told her that her son might suffer brain damage.
“The doctor said his eyes were not functioning well and were not responding to light,” she said.
“The doctor said the possible brain damage may not be due to the dog’s attack, but to his asthma. Then he fell into the drain, there was not enough oxygen going to his brain,” she said.
“This is the worst experience a mother can have,” she added.
It was learnt that Mohd Raqib was playing outside his cousin’s home when he was attacked by the dog.
It was believed that the dog dragged the boy to the drain.
Meanwhile, Ranau police chief DSP Suhaimi Hasim said they had not received any report of the incident, but will carry out an investigation once a report had been lodged.
