MAJOR CRIME GANG BUSTED

3rd March, 2011 KOTA KINABALU: Police have busted a major crime gang following the arrest of five suspects.

The gang, formed in 2009, is believed to be responsible for at least 28 robbery cases in Tawau and two states in the peninsula.

Three days prior to the gang members’ arrest on February 14, they had robbed a house in Taman Palma in Tawau and fled with cash and valuables worth RM65,000.

However, the victims were not harmed.

Speaking to reporters in Kepayan here yesterday, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the Taman Palma robbery victims lodged a police report on February 12 and the gang members aged between 22 and 27 were subsequently detained in Kampung Jamabatan two days later.

Two Samurai swords, a machete and a metal cutter were among the items seized from the gang.

Hamza said initial investigation showed that the gang had committed 22 armed robberies in Tawau, five in Johor and one in Terengganu.

To a question, Hamza said only one of them was found possessing a valid travel document.

All the five suspects are currently being detained under Section 395 and 397 of the Penal Code to facilitate further investigation, said the Police Commissioner.
