December 22, 2010 Kota Kinabalu: The price of coffee and tea will cost 10 sen to 30 sen more per cup in West Coast coffeeshops and restaurants early next year.
West Coast Coffee Shops and Restaurants Association Chairman Yong Chee Yun said the hike, except for the canned drinks, was unavoidable due to the costlier raw materials, especially sugar.
"We have no choice but to raise the prices of coffee and tea drinks, including Milo and Nestum because of the rising price of sugar, thick and ideal milk, Nescafe, Milo and ice," he said in a statement, Tuesday.
Yong said the association, which has 300 members, last raised prices in 2007. He cited the recent hike in sugar that had gone up by 29 per cent from RM1.55 per kg in 2007 to RM2 per kg, this year.
He said even the price of Nescafe classic powder per tong has risen from RM131 in 2007 to RM165.25 this year - an increase of 26 per cent.
Yong said the prices of other raw materials for the drinks also increased by between seven per cent to 29 per cent.
He further said the salaries of their workers have also increased over 50 per cent since 2007.
"For example, the salaries of waiters and waitresses have gone up from RM300 (2007) to RM500 this year," he said.
