FIRST MALAYSIAN TO REPRESENT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AS AN EXPERT ON AN INTERNATIONAL PLATFORM UNDER THE UNITED NATIONS

Jannie elected to head EMRIP

KOTA KINABALU, 27th August, 2009: A Kadazan has been elected as the chairperson-rapporteur at the second session of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP).

Jannie Lasimbang, will be the first Malaysian to represent indigenous peoples as an expert on an international platform under the United Nations.

Having successfully conducted the second session of EMRIP, she is now actively promoting EMRIP to UN agencies, treaty bodies, governments and indigenous organisations between now and the next session, next year.

EMRIP is a subsidiary body under the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) dealing with indigenous people’s rights.
