KOTA KINABALU, 5th May, 2009: People in Kg Suang Kepoh, Kota Marudu need urgent help to repair a suspension bridge in their village.

Sabah DAP which visited the area recently found the bridge was too dangerous for use but the villagers had no other option other than to risk their lives crossing it.

DAP Karambunai branch chairman John Lee in a statement issued here yesterday said they found wooden planks rotting away and one of the pillars holding the suspension cables falling apart.

John and vice chairman for DAP Karambunai, Lee Li Teck were recently in Kota Marudu to personally inspect the suspension bridge after receiving complaints from the villagers.

“We urge the authorities to act promptly before any untoward incident happens, especially when it is being used by some 40 students to get to school. We also learnt from the villagers that some of these students had actually fallen into the river in the past, while crossing the bridge,” said John.

He said the villagers and the students had no choice but to depend on the suspension bridge to cross the river at Kg Rasak Laut, as it was the nearest crossing.

He proposed immediate repair work on the bridge, citing that Sabah had been given RM1.2 billion under the Economic Stimulus package to carry out infrastructure development projects.
