THESE OFFICERS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE SITTING IN THEIR POSITION

Govt staff who take job lightly taken to task

image Kota Kinabalu, April 22, 2009 : A backbencher said he will not hesitate to name government officers who he claimed have failed to discharge their duties to assist the people, in particular the poor.

Participating in the motion of thanks debate, Merotai Assemblyman Pang Yuk Ming took to task government officers and staff who look lightly upon their responsibilities.

"I have seen this situation firsthand several months ago when I found out that there were only 44 people listed in the hardcore poor category in the Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) Rural Unit records but I knew there were more than that.

"I brought the matter up to the Council and during a meeting, a certain party asked me to gather all the families that I knew who were in the hardcore poor group to be registered.

"I did just that together with my People's Development Leaders Unit (UPKR) where I managed to gather some 400 families but unfortunately, the officer with the TMC Rural Unit refused to attend the meeting which had been set up to enable the registration of these families."

Pang said he was told the unit could only assist the 44 families already in their list and suggested that elected representatives, the Welfare Department as well as other relevant agencies meet to discuss the matter before the official list is finalised.

"I am of the view that the officer involved was irresponsible," he said, pointing out that this was the kind of civil servants that could delay the efforts of the Government to achieve zero poverty by 2010.

He questioned the authority of the officer to decide who and who cannot be registered, adding that the officer concerned should be assisting the elected representatives to identify and render assistance to those who deserve it.

"I urge the Government to take action on the matter as these officers are denying the poor to receive assistance from the Government. These officers do not deserve to be sitting in their position as they are hampering the efforts of the Government.

"If they continue with this kind of attitude, I will for sure bring up their names at the next sitting," he said.
