Kota Kinabalu: Sabah aims to become the location of choice in Asia for resource-based manufacturing by 2025.
Industrial Development Minister Datuk Ewon Ebin said to achieve this several programmes have been identified over three phases to stimulate growth of existing industries and attract private sector investments in targeted areas.
Ewon said the first phase is about seeding and catalysing growth in existing and new industries.
"Initiatives will be on fixing the basic infrastructural gaps, investing in human capital and putting in place a pro-business and pragmatic incentive regime to make it compelling for companies to shift to higher order value-added activities in Sabah," he said.
The second phase will involve a foundation building, where the focus will be on spawning local small-medium enterprises (SMEs) at POIC Sandakan and linked to the supply chain of larger established firms.
"In building SMEs, incentives will be provided for companies undertaking research and development (R&D), design and technology transfer activities. Management and R&D talents will be spawned from the Sandakan Education Hub," he said.
Ewon said here emphasis would be placed on creating local intellectual properties within the resource-based technology domain. A strong SME community will serve as a platform for Sabah to source for quality investments in global resource-based manufacturing business.
In this regard, he said, the Ministry of Industrial Development will continue with its efforts to promote investment in the targeted industrial and service activities.
The Ministry is very committed in developing and providing good-serviced industrial lots at reasonably low land premium for the industrialists, said Ewon.
"In general, the government is pro-business and very supportive of the businessmen and industrialists. I am sure with our concerted efforts, we can jointly make Sabah not only as a favourable destination for tapping in more investment but also make Sabah even more conducive to do business as well as a pleasant place to stay and enjoy a good quality of life," he said.
He said although Sabah's economy is still dominated by several primary sectors namely agriculture, livestock, productions, forestry and logging, the State Government has successfully transformed the State towards industrialisation.
"Sabah has a conducive development environment. The Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) will be the catalyst for the involvement of the public and private sectors in developing the State's economy through value-added products and providing various service businesses and job opportunities," he said.
Sabah has continued to attract foreign and domestic investment, he said, adding the State Government is also very sensitive and supportive of industrial development.
