Kota Kinabalu: State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the Federal Department of Environment (DOE) should consult and inform the State Government before making a decision on any proposal related to the environment in Sabah.
He was referring to reports on a proposal from Sabah Forest Industries (SFI) to open up a 40 megawatt coal-fired power plant at its factory in Sipitang, where DOE reportedly made a decision on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) done by the SFI management and conveyed its decision to the State Government.
"While the State Government accepts the fact that the EIA is under the Federal jurisdiction, if it involves State policy matters it is only proper that the department concerned consult and inform the State before making any final decision," he said.
"As you know the State government has a very strict policy on the environment. Since the coal-fired power plant is going to be built in Sabah it is only proper if it informed the State," said Masidi.
"I am not saying the State wants to make it difficult for whoever because it they comply with the rules obviously and technically there should be no reason why their plans cannot be put up for consideration.
"But at the same time, everyone needs to really understand that all authorities in Sabah, including the Federal authorities, have to work together with the State because whatever is going to happen in Sabah, it is the people of Sabah who are going to suffer and not those in Kuala Lumpur," he said.
Under normal procedure any such proposal needs to be tabled in the State Cabinet for any decision to be made on it, he said.
