STUDY ON WHAT SABAH HAS ACHIEVED OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS

Study by ex-Usno leaders on what Sabah has achieved

Kota Kinabalu September 10, 2010: A group of former leaders and loyal supporters of the now defunct United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) has embarked on a month-long mission to gather feedback from its former members and the public on what has been achieved in Sabah over the last 20 years, since Umno set its foot in the State.

They have appointed former Usno Vice President and co-founder of Sabah Umno, Datuk Karim Ghani, to lead the Statewide study.

Karim, a former Assemblyman and Senator as well as former Sabah Umno Information Chief, on Thursday said those who want to give comments or opinions can reach him at mobile phone number 012-8679263.

As to whether it has anything to do with any attempt to revive Usno, Karim, who did not agree or deny, said Usno is already dead.

On whether they have the blessing of all former Usno leaders, especially those who joined Umno and currently serving in the State Government and as elected representatives, he just said the former Usno leaders were aware of it.

"I will inform the outcome of the study one month from now," he said, calling for more support to the effort for the sake of bringing back the dignity of the rakyat in Sabah.

Usno was disbanded by its founder late Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun just after the 1990 general election, to make way for the United Malay National Organisation's (Umno) entry to Sabah.

Repair Sepulut-Kalabakan road fast: Kurup

PENSIANGAN September 10, 2010: Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup urged the Public Works Department (PWD) here to repair the Sepulut-Kalabakan road fast.

This is to ensure comfort and safety of motorists travelling from Tawau to Keningau or vice versa.

34. Recently, Pensiangan Umno deputy chief Ahuar Rasam said his vehicle nearly overturned at a damaged stretch of the Keningau-Kampung Salarom Taka road.

He said a bulldozer or high-powered 4x4 vehicle was needed to pull smaller vehicles during rainy season.

"Due to the condition of the road, lorries transporting stones and planks find it difficult to reach Salarom Taka, thus, rendering the contractors unable to carry out their work," said Kurup.

The PWD has been appointed to repair the Kalabakan-Sepulut road by the Government recently.

Ahuar said that fast repair is needed because Kampung Salarom Taka is set to become a tourism product.

He also said the road should also be sealed because the world-renowned Maliau Basin is situated between Sepulut and Kalabakan.

Sabah reduces poverty rate by seven per cent
    March 23, 2010, Tuesday

KOTA BELUD: The overall poverty rate in Sabah fell to 16 per cent in 2007, compared to 23.0 per cent in 2004, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin. He said based on the mid-term study of the Ninth Malaysia Plan(RMK-9), the hardcore poor rate also registered a drop to 3.7 per cent in 2007 compared to 6.5 per cent in 2004.

He highlighted that Sabah however, has still the highest poverty rate in the country.

“Hence, the state and Federal government budgets have a large allocation for the poverty eradication programme, with a zero hardcore poor target along-side reducing incidents of poverty,” he said.

Yahya said this in his speech at a ceremony to hand over allowances to participants of a chilli and mushrooms farming project using the fertigation system, under the poverty eradication programme here yesterday.

He said that the success in bringing down the poverty rate shows the determination of the state and Federal government in overcoming the problems faced by the people, through the various programmes created to eradicate poverty.

According to Yahya, the state government is confident of overcoming the hardcore poor poverty problem, by 2020.

Also the state Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, he said a number of agencies under his ministry were also implementing various programmes to eradicate poverty, with funding under the RMK-9.

He highlighted that among these are, the Village Development Cooperative (KPD) project to rear honey bees at a cost of RM9.02 million, the Subsidised Credit Assistance Scheme (SBKB) worth RM3.5 million implemented by the Sabah Fisheries and Fishermen’s Development Cooperative (Ko-Nelayan), the Subsidised Traditional Fishing Equipment Supply Scheme (PERMITS) at RM3.03 million and the Scheme to Improve the Social Status of Fishermen (PENTAS) at RM3.66 million.

On the chilli and mushroom project, Yahya said the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP) initiative is part of the government’s efforts to help lighten the burden of the hardcore poor, by enhancing income and allowing them to escape the clutches of poverty. —Bernama
