NO SIGN OF THE PROMISED PROMOTION FOR TEACHING STAFF

No sign of the promised promotion for teaching staff

Kota Kinabalu May 07, 2012: Senior Assistant Educators (GPK), Administrators, student affairs and co-curriculum staff in secondary schools in the State are still waiting for their promotion as promised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at last year's Teachers Day celebration.

Sabah Bumiputera Graduate Education Officers Association (P4SBS) President, Dr Hamid Hj Abdul Rahmat, said on May 16, 2011 the Government agreed to promote all DG44 grade positions to DG44 with effect from Jan. 1, 2012. However, there has been no effort by the Education Ministry in realising the matter.

"The Education Ministry said the decision to promote the post of Education Service Officers (PPP) and Support Service Groups (AKS) have been notified through the website.

"And it would take 10 days from the date the decision was made by the Board of Promotion of Education Officers (LKPPP).

"The Education Ministry, however, has been slow in taking action and this is not in line with their client's charter," he said on Sunday.

He said the body is disappointed by the Ministry's failure to realise the Prime Minister's announcement and to increase the level of professionalism of teaching.

Dr Hamid said with the promotion, teachers are likely to have a reviewed salary by about RM600-RM700.

Dr Hamid also found out that is not the only issue. Sabah officers were also faced with other problems such as housing allowance, teacher promotions and delay in the school upgrades.

"Many of the repair projects in the schools are done by contractors from outside the State and are appointed by the Ministry.

"In this matter, the delays are caused by the sub-contractors, which are mainly from Sabah.

"The main contractors are either hard to be contacted or just couldn't care less.

"There are cases where the Ministry have also been late in their payments to the main contractors despite the job having been completed following the terms and conditions of their contract.

This have caused them to be not able to pay their sub-contractors.

Thus the projects were delayed," said Dr Hamid.

In conjunction with this year's Teachers' Day Celebration he urged the Ministry to be more innovative and help boost the education transformation according to this year's celebration theme "Innovative Teachers boost Education Transformation".
