Houses given to the poor without water, electricity supply

TONGOD April 12, 2012: The 11 houses provided by the government to the people at Kampung Pelangi in Kinabatangan under the poor people housing programme are without water and electricity supply.
A group from the State Reform Party (STAR) found this out during a visit to the village on April 8.
Wiring has been done but there is no electricity. The poor families have to use dirty water from a nearby river for their daily chores such as washing clothes and cooking. They also depend on rainwater.
A house without electricity supply.
While the families and their relatives were very thankful to the government for the free houses, they had hoped that at least the basic necessities like water and electricity would also be made available to them.
A local leader, Asmat Majud, said that those families were grateful for the houses but were appealing to the state government to look into their plight even more passionately and not just helping them half-heartedly.
“It is most deplorable and irresponsible for government leaders to carry out such programme half-heartedly. It is almost like ushering the people into a house in a desert without water and food,” said STAR Kuamut leader James Ait. Also in the STAR group to visit Kampung Pelangi were STAR Kinabatangan division head Cyril Palantis and STAR’s coordinator for Sukau, Juhori Paritai.
According to the Oxford Business Group, around 20,000 affordable housing units will be built in Sabah over the next five years under a new partnership formed between the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA) and Malaysia’s Probil Sonati Development to cater to the hard core poverty, low and middle income groups.
BalasPadamHope that the government will ensure that these low cost housing is in good condition and with proper water and electricity supply.
