Newly-formed Bajau association joins calls for setting up of RCI

Kota Kinabalu Jan 03, 2012: The newly-formed Bumiputera Bajau Semporna Association (Perbubas) has joined the chorus in calling on the Federal Government to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the long-standing illegal immigrant and "Project IC" issues in Sabah.

Its President, Mansur Santiri, said they supported the call because their rights as Bumiputeras were wrongly compromised some 15 to 20 years ago.

"We urge the Government to re-analyse the issue of land approvalsÉthe leaders may have 'terlepas pandang' (missed) the problem,"

he said when met at the Daily Express office, here, Tuesday.

Santiri explained that from the 70s to 80s, most of the people working in the Sabah Land and Development Board (SLDB) in Semporna were Bugis with passports.

"They were all immigrants. But in the 90s, they obtained Identity Card (IC) and were given lands with a Native Title (NT)," he said, adding that the immigrants obtained their ICs under the "Project IC".

He claimed the Bugis received 400 acres in Semporna.

"These lands were meant for my father, Santiri Bingah, 64, and others.

My father led the group of Bumiputeras in applying for a total of 853 acres at Kg Ungkaraya in 1983.

"The application was approved, but some 400 acres were given to the Bugis," he said, disputing the Malaysian citizenship of the Bugis concerned.

Santiri also showed the original land application documents of his father dating back to 1983, signed by the SLDB land surveyor and also another letter seeking the status of the land signed by Minister in the Chief Minister Department, Datuk Nasir Sakaran. He said the "Project IC" had destroyed the rights of the real Sabahan natives.

According to Santiri, Perbubas was formed in March 2011 aimed at protecting the rights of the Bumiputera Bajaus in Semporna and it currently has about 200 members.

He expects the membership to reach 1,000 by the association's official launching on Jan 28.

    Inilah masalahnya, mereka ini sudah memegang IC Malaysia sejak zaman '90 lagi dan juga diberikan tanah seperti bumiputra tempatan. Susah hendak mengambil balik apa yang sudah diberikan.

    Bukan senang isu PATI dan projek IC ini dapat diselesaikan, tapi diharapakan RCI ini boleh memberikan penjelasan yang baik tentang isu ini supaya kita lebih faham dengan keadaan sebenar.

    The way I see it, the setting up of the Royal commission serve as the initial 'nail to the coffin' to ALL the problems that has spawn out of the illegal immigrants matter.

    since in the 90s, they had obtained IC. No doubt they had been breeding like rabbits before and they are still doing it now. So its no wonder that its difficult to deport them back.

    RCI is may not be the best way to solve this issue but it serve as an investigation to understand how project IC happen in the first place. Through the investigation, a possible solution could be decided to solve it.

    saya rasa tahun ini RCI akan ditubuhkan.. lambat atau cepat, ia perlulah dirancang dengan berhati2 dan teliti kerana penubuhan RCI memerlukan kos yang tinggi.. tapi bagi saya lebih baik jika pihak2 yang menyokong penubuhan RCI ini memikirkan alternatif lain untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini samada untuk digerakkan bersama2 dengan RCI itu sendiri mahupun sebagai backup sekiranya RCI gagal mencapai matlamat..
