'Tell pupils of career options'
16 January 2012 : Students should be introduced to wider career options at school, Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities president Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh said.
He said counsellors in schools played an important role in keeping the students updated and informed on alternative industries.
"It will be too late to change what they want to pursue at the tertiary level once they have completed high school studies.
"The best time to introduce new courses to our bright students is in high school. Counsellors in schools should be trained and exposed to various fields of studies so that they can give necessary guidance to the students,"
he told the New Straits Times.
He was commenting on remarks by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin on Saturday that top students should also consider courses in software engineering, technology engineering, Islamic banking, health sciences, sports science, tourism, hospitality and entrepreneurship.
Yesterday, Khaled said local institutions of higher learning were expanding courses in various fields, especially in information technology, which was deemed critical in the country's progress.
He said by widening options, top students could opt for courses such as health sciences or technology engineering, which promised rewarding careers.
"Students should understand that fields like medicine and law are highly competitive. The country is in need of expertise in these new fields, too."
He said 121 new programmes in various levels, such as foundation, diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate were offered by local institutions of higher learning, which gave students a range of choices.
Parent Action Group for Education president Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said most parents would not mind encouraging their children to take up new courses provided there were enough jobs for the graduates.
"We will guide them to take up new courses, but often, job availability is always our main concern.
"We don't want our children to end up working overseas due to limited jobs available locally after they graduate from these new courses."
I agree, students could consider taking up courses in fields that are more in demand of employees in the country so that they will not end up unemployed.
BalasPadamExpertise such as in medicine, education and agriculture are in high demand, therefore students can consider going into these professions.
Padamapart from that, students needs to be exposed to entrepreneurship skills. This too may help them to be more self reliant.
BalasPadamAs highlighted in the article, apart from interest....the job demand too needs to be taken into consideration in planning one's future career
BalasPadamThis is a good reminder to school counselors and students. Better to have an earlier plan so that you can have a little bit 'picture' of the future.
