Man stabbed to death over alleged rape bid

LAHAD DATU Dec 16, 2011: A Filipino was found stabbed to death in a quarters at Felda Sahabat 7, Jalan Tungku here on Wednesday night after they allegedly tried to rape the assailant’s wife.

The body of the victim, who was only identified as Edwin, 47, was found in the quarters at about 10pm.

Another man, said to be also involved in the incident, was admitted to the Lahad Datu Hospital with serious stab wounds in the abdomen.

District police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mat, who confirmed the incident, said the victims and the suspect were drinking alcohol in the quarters and were drunk.

“Initial investigations showed that the suspect stabbed both victims after they entered his house, which is located nearby, and tried to rape his wife.

“Both victims fled the house after their attempt failed. However, the suspect chased after them as they ran back to the quarters and stabbed them,” he said.

Shamsudin said police had recovered and seized an 18-inch long knife which is believed to be used to stab the victims.

He said police detained the suspect’s wife at about 5am yesterday at the scene and were looking for her husband for investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Three teenagers get jail, cane for gang robbery

KOTA KINABALU Dec 16, 2011 : Three teenagers were sentenced to six years’ jail and ordered to be whipped once by the Sessions Court here yesterday for gang robbery.

High Court deputy registrar, Zulkifli Abllah who sat as a Sessions Court judge meted out the sentence on Romanus Rafi, 18, Mohd Shukri Sulaiman, 21, and Alexander Anton Sangah, 19, after they pleaded guilty to the joint charge.

The trio admitted to robbing a 57-year-old man of jewelleries, a hand watch, a laptop, and two cell phones altogether worth RM10,000 using a knife.

They committed the offence at a house in Kampung Lumatak, Membakut about 8.30pm on Nov 2.

Romanus, Mohd Shukri and Alexander were jointly charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping on conviction.

The facts of the case stated that while the victim and his wife were in their house, they heard someone greeting them.

When they opened the door, they saw three unknown men who pointed a knife at the couple and asked them to keep silent. The three men then entered the house and took the said items before fleeing.

They were arrested by police the next day following a police report lodged by the victim.

In pleading for leniency, the trio, who were unrepresented by any lawyer, informed the court that they regretted what they had done. Romanus and Mohd Shuki also told the court that they have to look after their mothers who were sick.

Meanwhile, Alexander informed the court that he was the sole breadwinner of the family and has to take care of his siblings.

Prosecuting officer ASP Sabrina Jinius, however, pressed for a heavy sentence to be imposed on all the accused as they had committed a serious offence involving armed robbery.

She said the court should take into consideration the public interest and rampancy of such cases before passing sentence.

Two Indonesian ship’s crew fined for trespassing

LABUAN Dec 16, 2011 : The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday fined two crew members of an Indonesian ship RM1,500, in default, two months’ imprisonment for trespassing on Labuan Liberty Port Management (LLPM) property.

Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles fined Hamzah Gani and Muhammad Husni, both in their 20s, after they pleaded guilty to trespassing.

The court was told that LLPM security guards arrested Hamzah and Muhammad around 4am on December 14, this year, when they climbed up the fence to enter into the LLPM area.

A police report stated that Hamzah and Muhammad were coming back from the town to their ship which was anchored at the port of LLPM.

Both of them discovered that the main gate of the port had been locked and the security guard on duty was also sleeping.

They tried to climb the fence to get into the port.

The other security guard who was on duty, became suspicious of the accused’s action which led him to detain them and handed them over to the police.

Hamzah and Muhammad were charged and tried under Section 447 of the Penal Code which provides for a term of up to six months and a fine up to RM3,000 or both.

Meanwhile, in another case at the same court, local Aladin Wong Guang Chin, 40, was jailed for two years for stealing and selling a stolen item.

The facts of the case stated that police detained Aladin around 2.30pm on March 17 this year for selling a stolen Acer laptop to a Filipino woman at Kampung Sinar Baru, Kimanis, Papar.

Aladin stole the laptop from a house at Lot 29, Taman Wong Wo Lo Phase 1, a day before his arrest and sold it to the woman around 11.30pm on the same day.

The owner of the laptop only found his laptop missing around 10am the same day.

Later at 12.46pm the same day, the laptop owner lodged a police report.

Aladin was also convicted of two other offences under Section 414 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to seven years or a fine, or both.

Chief inspector Hasnan Abidin prosecuted both cases.
