FOUR FOREIGN MEN CAUGHT STEALING SCRAP METAL

Four foreign men caught stealing scrap metal

KOTA KINABALU August 30: The marine police nabbed four foreign men red-handed for attempting to steal scrap metal worth RM1,000 at the Sepanggar Port in Sepanggar here recently.

Acting city police chief DSP Peter Anak Umbuas said the arrests were made at 6am on August 27 after police were tipped off of a theft activity in the area.

“After receiving a tip-off from the public, a marine police team was deployed to keep the area under surveillance.

“Around 6am, two boats were seen approaching a jetty. One of the suspects was seen waiting inside a boat while three other suspects were loading the scrap metal into the boat,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Marine Operations Force headquarters here yesterday.

The case would be investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine, or both, on conviction.

Peter added the suspects, all foreigners without documents and aged 18 to 48, had been remanded and would be handed over to the Immigration Department for further action.

He thanked the public for providing the tip-off to the police and looked forward to such cooperation in the future.
